The Chinese baldness cure is based on something Larry David tried in real life. The shots Kramer (Michael Richards) takes of George's (Jason Alexander) scalp are identical to those the real Kenny Kramer took of Larry David.
It is the first appearance of Ping, the delivery boy who would return in the later episodes The Visa (1993), The Virgin (1992), The Pilot (1993) and The Finale (1998).
The fictional name of the porno is "Elaine Does The Upper West Side." The original title for the film was going to be "Hannah Does Her Sisters," which is an actual title of a real-life adult movie. Julia Louis-Dreyfus had a small role in the film that inspired that porno, Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters (1986).
Kramer mentions he was sleeping with Marion the other night. She is the library employee that he started seeing three episodes earlier, in The Library.
"The Tape" was used in a Dartmouth College experiment to study brain activity in relation to humorous moments in television shows. The results were published in a 2004 issue of the academic journal Neurolmage. The researchers noted, "During moments of humor detection, significant [brain] activation was noted in the left posterior middle temporal gyrus ... and left inferior frontal gyrus."
