- Jerry meets his idol-former New York Mets baseball player Keith Hernandez (appearing as himself)-and wants to make a good impression. George tells Jerry that Keith is a baseball player and in a much higher league than Jerry, who is just a comedian. Keith recognizes Jerry from his comedy acts and comes over to say hi. Jerry & George tell Keith how they are his fans. Keith makes plans with Jerry to have coffee, but George tells him off, which angers Keith. George talks about how an entire baseball team is eventually likely to be wiped out, due to the number of flights that all the teams undertake during a season.
It's been 3 days and Keith hasn't called Jerry. Jerry is angry and confides to Elaine like a girl. He says Keith should call, and that he hates guys when they take the number and never call. Elaine consoles her as she has had this conversation several times before. Elaine tells Jerry to pick up the phone and call Keith. This is a very confusing experience for Jerry.
Jerry is anxious to meet Keith and starts acting like a nervous girl going on a first date with a guy. He tries on many shirts and all to impress Keith, which angers Elaine. As Jerry is trying his shirts, Kramer & Newman come over & narrate that they hate Keith Hernandez as he spit on them in a game in 1987. Although the way the events are narrated are very similar to the magic bullet incident that killed John Kennedy. Jerry says that the spit could not have come from behind from Keith, and that there had to be a second Spitter hiding in the bushes in the front.
Meanwhile, George is out of time on his unemployment support, and he works harder than ever on his scheme to get a 13-week extension. George has to prove that he is looking for a job, to get an extension. He tells the unemployment office that he was close to a job with Vandelay Industries, a company that makes latex products and whose main office is Jerry's apartment. George says that he has interviewed with the company for the position of latex salesman.
As he tells this lie, George knows that the office will call Jerry's apartment to verify his statements. So, George calls ahead, but Kramer doesn't let George talk to Jerry as Kramer is on another call. George has to run all the way back to warn Jerry to only pick up the phone as Vandelay industries, till the call from the unemployment office comes.
Kramer and Newman accuse Keith of spitting on them during a Mets game at Shea Stadium; however, Jerry supports a "second-Spitter theory" and that Keith was not involved. The dinner between Keith and Jerry goes like a nervous first date, with Jerry finally feeling what it likes to be a woman. Keith asks Jerry about Elaine's relationship status (as they had given a ride to her earlier in the night), then makes a date with her, breaking a date he previously made with Jerry. Keith calls Jerry to reschedule his date with Jerry to the following week. Jerry is a bit jealous of Elaine.
Finally, the unemployment office calls, Jerry is out, George is on the toilet and Kramer picks the phone and blurts the truth out.
Having been busted by his unemployment officer Ms Sokol (Rae Allen) after Kramer unknowingly answers Jerry's phone, George tells the unemployment officer that the phone was picked by a fellow salesperson at Vandelay Industries, who wanted to sabotage George's chance of getting hired. George then says that he finds her daughter, whose picture was on the desk, breath taking. The officer says that she does not have a boyfriend. George pretends to be extremely excited when Sokol offers her daughter's number to George. George tries to curb losing his benefits by taking the officer's daughter Carrie (Carol Ann Susi) out for a date. The date goes terribly wrong for him as Carrie breaks up with George, as he has no job and no prospects. This causes George to express to Jerry his desire to date a tall woman. George has never worked harder to remain unemployed.
Meanwhile, Jerry becomes jealous that Keith is spending more of his time dating Elaine. Keith even kisses Elaine when he comes over to drop her off after their date, until Elaine ends the relationship because he smokes. When Keith asks Jerry to help him move his furniture, Jerry accepts, but is derided by Kramer & Elaine that it is too soon for their friendship. They make it sound like the equivalent of putting out on the first date from a woman's perspective. George says the same and adds that "the next thing you know you will be driving him to the airport". Jerry tries to defend Keith that he has some valuable antiques, and he is worried that the movers will break something. Jerry is adamant that he will never drive Keith to the airport. Keith finally tells Jerry that there are no stairs, he needs to help move stuff for 4 hours, and the stuff in his apartment is really complicated and heavy (thick marble coffee table, a sectional sofa with 12 pieces, 2 dressers and a bed, box spring, and a convertible sofa that comes apart when it is carried). Jerry refuses and breaks his friendship with Keith.
Right then, Kramer and Newman confront Keith on the alleged "spitting incident". Keith provides them with the truth that, he in fact saw the real Spitter, and names Phillies relief pitcher Roger McDowell. Kramer and Newman then remember they had taunted McDowell throughout the game and the pair apologize to Keith, also offering to help move his furniture.
George rushes in with one last desperate attempt to win over his unemployment officer by getting Keith to meet her, as the unemployment officer is a big fan of baseball & is about to make George lose his benefits as he failed to satisfy her daughter. The officer gives George 1 hour to get Keith to come to her office to meet her. But again, George is not able to speak with Jerry and by the time he gets to Jerry's apartment, he has already broken up with Keith.
As he mopes, a tall woman suddenly appears with George's wallet, which he had dropped on the sidewalk outside, causing George to give a happy smile.
