The name "Cartwright" may be a reference to the Cartwrights from the TV series "Bonanza," whose cook, Hop Sing, was Chinese. During the run of the series, there are other references to this TV western. In "The Watch," a doorman tells Russell Dalrymple that "A George Bonanza is calling" and in "The Race," a Chinese Restaurant's name is Hop Sing.
Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) mentions that he has a sister. She is never mentioned again in the series.
NBC felt that the episode was uninteresting and did not want to air it. Eventually the network agreed to air the episode, but it was relegated to the end of the season. The network's response was parodied in episode 4.10, The Virgin (1992), where Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) suggests an episode very much like this one but the NBC executives are not impressed.
In the restaurant when Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) walks up to the table to grab an egg-roll and explains the bet, the people at the table begin to talk among themselves. Larry David can be heard in the ensuing confusion. If he sounds like the Yankees boss later in the series, is because Larry David does both voices.
The whole episode plays out in real time and on one set. NBC executives were against this idea but the episode went ahead and became a fan and critic favorite.
Kramer does not appear in this episode. At this point in the series, it was established that Kramer had not left the apartment building in many years. Michael Richards expressed his disappointment at not being included in the episode because he felt it was the series' best episode at the time.
