I just saw this episode and I am completely blown away with how well the writers were able to pack so much into a 50 minute episode. The premise of the episode is a teenage boys suicide due to pressure from his father, but the themes include farther son dynamics, how the scars from childhood trauma from your parents stay with you, male communication issues and dealing with grief in a number of ways. The episode beautifully encapsulates the struggles of growing up as a boy and the unique pressures you have to deal with being a son.
It's done in a very genuine and authentic way which most boys would be able to relate to in some stages of their life's. Whether it's the young boys sadness and guilt for not saying anything, Diver Dan's old demons about his father revisiting him, the importance of a father figure growing up when you've lost or don't have a good father, or even being forced to work in your father's business.
I don't think I'll ever forget this episode, it's fantastic. It bought me to tears as I'm wondering who's dealt with and am still feeling with a number of the themes addressed in this episode.
