THE SANDBAGGERS "Always Glad to Help" 1978

The SANDBAGGERS was a UK series set during the Cold War. The series follows a small unit of the SIS, which deals with various intelligence gathering problems. (Or eliminating said problems) The cast includes Roy Marsden, Ray Lonnen, David Glyder, Liz Bennett, Richard Vernon, Bob Sherman and Jerome Willis. The series ran for 20 episodes between 1978 and 1980.This is the fifth episode of the production run.

Roy Marsden is in charge of a covert action section of the UK Secret Service, the SIS.

This one starts with SIS operations chief, Marsden, meeting with several of his higher ups, Jerome Willis and Richard Vernon. There is bit of a dispute going on with various government departments. The Ministry of Defense wants Marsden to look into a Russian cargo ship that keeps showing up in ports near NATO bases. They believe that the Reds are using the ship to collect intelligence on NATO ships.

There are also several other irons in the fire with regards to a possible coup in the Middle East, and a Russian defector in Turkey. Sandbagger, Ray Lonnen is sent to Istanbul to see about the defector. Lonnen is to find out whether he is worth reeling in. Sandbagger, Diane Keen is sent to get the goods on the possible coup leader. The man, Peter Miles lives in England. His father runs a small country in the Middle East. Keen is to find out if Miles is really planning a take-over.

Stirring things up is the head liaison official between the Government and the Intelligence services. The man, Alan MacNaughtan, sees the coup as an opportunity to impress the Government. He also happens to be Marsden's ex father in-law.

Marsden is being pushed and pulled by the various branches to help set up the coup and deal with the other matters all at the same time. Marsden though does not like to rush matters, and advises caution. And right he is, as it turns out the UK would have backed the wrong side in the coup. Then the defector turns out to be a minor fish and is tossed back. The only success on the books is that SIS divers have discovered that the Soviet ship is indeed a spy vessel. The Reds are using a hatch under the ship to drop listening devices near NATO ports.
