- While working as a tour guide at the Houston Zoo, Tod and other zoo staff save a young woman who tried to kill herself by purposely wandering into the bear pit. After calming down, the young woman, Maria Cardenas, tells Tod her story. From a wealthy loving family, Maria was devoted to her father who died eight years ago. To distract her from her grief, Maria's mother, Elena, provided her with private riding lessons by a young man named Juan Pablo De Amundo, a penniless riding master. Within a month, Juan and Elena were married, Juan the new master of the house. He still has a career providing riding lessons. However, Maria has evidence that Juan is trying to kill Elena, outwardly to abscond with the Cardenas fortune while it would also allow him to move on to cavorting openly with other women. Maria pulled the bear pit stunt solely to place a spotlight on the family, so that Juan would now not dare try anything. She feels she can't go to the authorities or the family lawyer, who would be supportive of Juan. And she knows her mother would not believe her since she is madly in love with Juan to the point of being jealous of other women. As Tod gets more involved in Maria, Elena and Juan's lives as a collective, he will find that there are four sides to this story: Maria's, Elena's, Juan's and the truth.—Huggo
