White Trash Christmas (#6.12)

Warning: Spoilers
Bev takes DJ to see Nutcracker and surprises Darlene. DJ ends up seeing David there and bribes them to stay quiet. Dan and Roseanne give Becky a check for her school but she wants it for Mark's college. When they take it away she gets a job in a bar with a very sexy uniform that starts a problem.

I don't get what is the big deal about Becky's job. She isn't a prostitute, the uniform is not lessening her dignity she just uses male stupidity to get money just from wearing shorts. People dress like this as a norm these days. But it does kind of such that she doesn't want to go to college. When you get money sometimes people giving it should have a right to tell you what they want it to be spent on, it is their money. And it is so sad that a bright woman stays at home while that dumb guy goes to college.

DJ in Darlene's place though was very funny, with bribing David in the bathroom especially.

Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #35
kgraovac20 December 2023
The Connors receive a memo from the Neighborhood Association about their tacky outdoor Xmas décor; Dan gifts Becky with a cheque to pay for college, which she passes onto Mark; while visiting Darlene in Chicago with Bev, DJ discovers a damning secret about his sister.

This era of ROSEANNE marked the point where the series really began to revel in the whole White Trash aesthetic and got more mean-spirited like MARRIED: WITH CHILDREN. The whole plot about the decorations made the Conners seem more like the Bundys.

The plot line about Darlene's secret provides the most humor. It's hilarious when we see DJ get the upper hand. Then, there's a sweet moment where DJ reveals he misses his sister, Bev has a great line about Darlene's apartment: "Filth is fun when you're young".

This is the episode where Becky takes a job at a Hooter's-type establishment called Bunz, and Roseanne refers to it as "my daughter's new career as a prostitute".

The episode title says it all: a tacky, trashy episode -- but intentionally so -- and worth watching at least once. 7/10.
