Tech consultant Natalie Kramer (Cindy Pickett) has an attempt made on her life after working late at her office. She thinks the reason ties in with a top secret project she is working on. Genius colleagues of hers get killed. Having heard that old friend Murray Bozinski (Thom Bray) - a video game designer and inventor has become a partner in a detective agency she hires him to protect her and investigate why someone wants her dead.
Being a small world Natalie also has a past with Nick Ryder (Joe Penny) - one of Murray's two partners in the agency, The other being Cody Allen (Perry King). Natalie went to high school with Nick and loathes him for a single sketchy incident. She quite rightly views both Cody and Nick with disdain judging them to be a couple of himbos with Peter Pan complexes.
Riptide was another of the TV guilty pleasures I grew up with but only watched casually. Whilst Cody and Nick were ingratiating they were still smooth-talking, womanizing, pretty-boys matched together in one of the least complicated 'bromances' in TV history. Their industrious but socially awkward buddy Murray did well in the trade off meeting the beautiful women who are always around his hunky friends when he moved in with them.
For the third consecutive episode the guys protect a female client whom one of them romances and for the third consecutive episode Cody and Nick get beaten up. The premise of the show was as lightweight as Cody and Nick were. The hint of romance in episodes would seemingly never get serious obviously because playboys Cody and Nick weren't ready for it.
As for guest stars on the show the trend was to go tall and slender. Thom Bray was very thin, Perry King and Joe Penny were in terrific shape and all three were well over six feet tall. A tall, slender actress like Cindy Pickett fit in as would others of the same physical type.
