The studio audience laughed so long during the scene in which the Polymorph morphs into Lister's boxer shorts that Chris Barrie had to wait several minutes to say his line. It took more time than usual for the editors to put the scene together due to the long laughter.
On the DVD commentary, Craig Charles says that the show received hate mail because of the "clitoris" joke. One woman wrote that she was so appalled by the joke she would never watch the show again and was also embarrassed that she had to explain what a clitoris is to her 8-year-old daughter.
The pre-credits warning about the episode's content was just a comedic device as the episode was broadcast past the 9:00 pm watershed where adult content is allowed.
Director Ed Bye and production designer Mel Bibby drew inspiration for the look and design of the set and the Polymorph from Alien (1979).
In the early 1990s, the series aired in Canada on YTV, a channel aimed at young viewers. While the network usually had to exercise some censorship in terms of language or other content, they evidently gave up trying to make this a family friendly episode, and so it never aired on YTV.
