Some classic moments in strong overall episode
snoozejonc14 November 2020
Red Dwarf encounters an Earth vessel containing Kryten, a mechanoid programmed to serve human masters.

This has some pretty funny moments in a reasonably strong episode, but importantly it introduces Kryten, who will be a central character from series 3 onwards.

The best scenes are when the Dwarf crew visit the crashed space shuttle expecting to meet some members of the opposite sex before learning the fate of its human crew. This is a great black comedy situation and produces some great banter. Also, the sequence where Cat has to be forcibly removed from in front of a mirror is brilliantly funny.

For me the other parts of note are the crew getting ready to meet the "ladies" and the concluding scene that leads to Kryten doing a Marlon Brando impression amidst several references to classic, counter-culture movies.

Humour as always is in the eye of the beholder so it really depends on how funny you find the other scenes as to how much enjoyment can be taken from the episode.

All performances are excellent, including David Ross who guest stars as Kryten.

Kryten

A really strong season 2 opener with a pastiche of the Australian soap opera Neighbours called Androids and the introduction of Kryten played by David Ross for the first and only time.

Red Dwarf intercepts a distress call from the Space cruiser Nova 5. The crew rush in to help as the android Kryten tells them that the crew consists of beautiful women who have not had male company in eons. The crew have been dead for so long that only their skeleton remains.

With Kryten aboard Red Dwarf and built only to serve. Rimmer gives him some tasks and Lister wants him to rebel.

The episode really has some wonderfully funny scenes and gags. Such as Cat needing to be dragged away from a mirror to Kryten's Brando impersonation.

I really liked David Ross's version of Kryten. I always wondered why his English accent was replaced by a seemingly mid atlantic version when it was recast.

I always felt when the first series of Red Dwarf was broadcast that I was the only one watching. Now I could get other people to see the show with me.

Red Dwarf clicks up a gear

I was a bit disappointed with Season 1 of red Dwarf. Red Dwarf is one of those cult shows that you feel you just have to watch, just to get all the in-jokes from your friends and in other shows. I was expecting something brilliant but for the most part Season 1 didn't come close to that.

Season 1 was rarely laugh-out-loud funny, with a dry humour that was very hit-and-miss. What made me keep watching was the fact that it had potential to be hysterically funny.

With the first episode of Season 2 we see some of that potential realised with jokes and skits that are quite clever and very funny. Still not exactly non-stop hilarity but the show has definitely loosened up and clicked up a gear.

Kryten

Adding a new main character to a show can be difficult, what if the audience doesn't like them? What if they don't fit in and are constantly remembered as the "new guy"? Well this episode has none of those problems. This is one of the greatest character introductions. Kryten is absolutely hilarious in every scene. And he looks funny too!
