- Charlie is a simple farmer who never gets the respect he feels he deserves, His beautiful wife Thedy, runs with other men whenever the mood strikes her. Charlies only friends, his fellow townspeople, laugh at him behind his back. One night, Charlie visits a local traveling carnival. There, in a tent, he finds a strange object preserved in a glass jar. Charlie convinces the carnival barker to sell it to him for $40. For the first time since he can remember, Charlie feels he has something special in his life. When he shows it to his friends, they all start visiting him. Night after night, they sit at his table, peering into the jar, wondering what it could be. Was the strange, deformed-looking object ever alive? Could it be a jellyfish or even a deformed child, they wonder. Having created a social outlet for his neighbors, Charlie finds a new sense of confidence. When his wife threatens to tell his friends that the object is only a hoax, Charlie decides he doesnt have to put up with her abuse any longer. Later that night the townspeople come by again. He tells them his wife is away visiting relatives. But, where is she really?
