Recently, I discovered "Racket Squad" from archive.org and have downloaded quite a few of these old episodes. The show in unique in that it looks a bit like "Dragnet" but is dedicated to solving cases where con men (and women) swindle the unsuspecting public.
In "The Bill of Sale Racket", a woman calls Captain Braddock about a swindle. She's not just upset about the crime but is worried that her husband (a war vet with a gun) will shoot the criminals if he sees them. Naturally Braddock wants to hear about her problem and a flashback ensues. It seems that her husband and a friend were partners--and owned a gas station and restaurant. While the husband was off fighting in Korea, two guys approached her and the partner with a deal seemingly too good to be true--they wanted to buy their businesses and to show they were serious, they had arranged for an escrow account where the money would be held for the sale. Naturally, the entire deal was a swindle. But how? And, what about the hot-headed hubby?
This is an interesting and informative episode. It is also unique because although Braddock warns the husband not to use his gun, the guy does--and it works out just fine! Odd...and very enjoyable. A worthwhile installment of a very good series.
