This story makes a common mistake in geography. The problem for Ward Toyama was that he was expecting the ship to go straight from Los Angeles to the Gulf of Siam, only to discover there would be an unscheduled detour to Japan first, thereby making his shipment late for his delivery date. On a flat map this would make perfectly good sense. But as it was proven centuries ago the Earth is round. If one consults a globe, and put one end of a piece of string on Los Angeles, and the other end on the Gulf of Siam, the path of the ship would already sail down along the east coast of Japan as it headed for its destination, meaning there would be no detour at all.
When King goes to sign Grant's contract, he doesn't lift the cover to sign at the bottom of the contract itself, he simply signs on the cover, which would be pointless.
At Ward Toyama's trial upon the ship, Perry says that the cargo crates were going to go ''Behind the Iron Curtain'', the crates were still in Los Angeles, but were on their way to 'the Gulf of Siam' (presumably Thailand) with a stop in Japan added later on. The metaphorical Iron Curtain was located in Europe and the Western parts of then Soviet Russia (i.e. Ukraine, Belarus). However, the description for this refers to it as ''The Bamboo Curtain''
