The original murder defendant is someone other than Perry's client. Perry exonerates the defendant by entering an amicus curiae petition and providing exculpatory evidence in the judge's chambers.
The smoke grenade launcher used by the police is a civilian version of the M-79 "Thumper" or "Bloop Gun". It was designed by the Springfield Armory, between 1953 and 1960. It was put in service with the military in 1961. More than 350,000 were built in U.S. alone. They remain in limited service. They have largely been replaced by the M-203 grenade launcher, which is much smaller and versatile.
While Perry and Paul visit the police records department (about ten minutes in) they are joined by Lt. Drumm, who needs a light for his cigarette. Perry obliges and behind them on the counter is an enormous American Cancer Society display-right next to an overflowing ashtray.
While Perry Mason featured Ford Motor Co. products prominently throughout its nine-year run, other makes were showcased occasionally; Seasons Two and Three showed Mason driving Cadillac convertibles, and Drake driving a Chevrolet Corvette here and there. This is one of several Season Nine offerings in which American Motors' Rambler Ambassador (most likely the lower-trimmed 880 series) was used as one of the police cruisers. AMC didn't go out of their way to solicit placement on TV programs; the only other show which comes to mind was Superman in the early 1950s, which used Nash vehicles (AMC's predecessor).
Mary Ann Mobley was selected as Miss America 1959.
This was the third and last time Don Dubbins played Deputy D.A. Vincent. All and all he appeared in 7 episodes of the show.
