While in Hawaii to check on property for a hotel development, Perry is asked to help Anona Gilbert, who owns a critical piece of property. Her fiancé, who is involved in a scheme involving the land, breaks their engagement and is murdered.

In Hawaii, doing work for a hotel chain that is thinking of acquiring prime beach front property, Perry Mason and Paul Drake find themselves involved in a murder. Jarvis Logan owns the beach front property on each side of a small point out in the bay that is owned by a trust for Anona Gilbert, which he oversees. Douglas Kelland is a beachcomber and avid surfer who is engaged to the beautiful Anona Gilbert. He suddenly breaks off his engagement when it is revealed he is still married to Dolly Jameson. He's found something important on the property Perry has been looking into, important enough for someone to kill him with a spearfishing gun. Paul Drake saw Anona running away from the murder scene after she had been asked to come there by Douglas, and Perry defends her at the preliminary hearing.
