On the coach, the boys are singing along to a cover of The Beatles "Help", by Bananarama and French and Saunders (with Kathy Burke) which was that years official single for Comic Relief.
The little boy, who laughs at Albert when the boat that he was directing hits the iceberg whilst at Margate, is the son of Patrick Murray, who plays Mickey Pearce.
The closing song "Down to Margate" was written and performed by cockney singers Chas & Dave. John Sullivan, had intended Chas and Dave to sing the opening theme song "Only Fools and Horses", but they were unavailable so he sang it himself. Interestingly, many people think that Nicholas Lyndhurst sang the opening song due to the similarity of the voices.
John Sullivan's sister-in-law Penny was the inspiration behind the script, as she told him of an event her father used to go on each year, called "The Jolly Boys Outing".
The roller coaster shown in the episode is the UK's oldest roller coaster and the fifth oldest in the world. The Scenic Railway is still at the Dreamland amusement park in Margate; it is listed by English Heritage and has been rebuilt and reopened along with the rest of the park. The ferris wheel and the spinning boat (The Mary Rose), which were also shown, have been removed.
A scene with Michael Bilton and Fanny Carby as guests at the Villa Bella was filmed but had to be cut because of lack of time.
