When part one of this episode was filmed on July 15th, 1983, German-American actress Elke Sommer played the character of Erica Chase. However, when it came time to film the second part of the episode Sommer, who had returned to Germany, refused to come back to finish the project. Bob Newhart said in an interview he believed Sommer's agent had misrepresented to her the compensation she was to receive for the episode and thus she refused to return to Hollywood to finish the second part. Stella Stevens was then hired to film part two of the episode plus reshoot Sommer's scenes with Newhart from part one.

Due to a casting change, this episode needed extensive re-shoots. The production schedule for Newhart called for a new show to be shot every week. Due to the last minute casting change, this show was shot in the same week as episode 2. Aside from a few chuckles, there is noticeably little reaction from the audience. This is because there wasn't time to get a studio audience so the episode was filmed in front of the writers and crew. If you listen closely, you can hear the producer's loud laughter at some of the funnier punchlines.
