    THE HIPPO CAPER.

Campy fun. Cross between a horror film and a practical joke gone haywire. Steve is called up to Mike's college to have a talk with the dean (Alexander Lockwood).

Issue: Hippopotamus footprints all over da' place???

Told in flashback, the dean relates the trippy gag Mike and his Sigma Gam frat pals played at a local reservoir. Mike got a hold of an old, carved out hippo foot (used for umbrellas?) and the guys hatched a plan to "stamp" footprints around the dam. Pretty wild stuff, though there are consequences, right?

The reservoir caretaker (Hank Patterson from GREEN ACRES) thinks there's a prehistoric monster loose(!), calling the cops and wildlife officials ASAP. These guys are scratchin' their heads, then the find makes news headlines! In between it all, it's kind of creepy, a slant to a grade-B horror film, and Patterson is fun playing the frightened caretaker.

Good cast, featuring Mike Minor, soon to co-star on PETTICOAT JUNCTION. Douglas Lambert, who we lost too soon, plays Buzz. Dennis Whitcomb, working today as a script researcher, plays Jeff. Veteran Alexander Lockwood turned up in many movies and tv shows, like PERRY MASON.

Without fail, Steve makes the best understanding dad, but the guys have to fess up. Co-written by director Richard Whorf (who probably got the idea from a sci fi film?), soon to take charge of the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES.

Check out the new '62 Corvair coupe in the closing credits; Chevy was the show's sponsor. SEASON 2 EPISODE 35 remastered dvd box set. All 12 seasons are now on dvd in a single box set. Thanks much to CATCHY TV for the memories.

    What Are You?

(*Dean Talbot quote*) - "Even the smallest incident can turn into a volcano."

Mike Douglas is being initiated into the Sigma Gam fraternity.

The fraternity's 3 ring-leaders, Buzz, Ray and Jeff, use Mike's hippopotamus foot umbrella stand as a prank which creates lots of curiosity around the campus.

It doesn't take long for Dean Talbot to get wind of these high-jinks shenanigans and try to get to the bottom of things.

    • Trivia
The plot was likely taken from a prank pulled on the Cornell University campus in the 1920's, where a student used a rhino foot wastepaper basket to make tracks leading to the reservoir. He later confessed in an anonymous letter.
    • Quotes

Jeff: Yeah but what's all this jazz about a hippopotamus foot?

Mike Douglas: Well that's what that is. I guess they didn't care what they used for an umbrella stand in the old days.

Buzz Talbot: It's real, toes and all.

Mike Douglas: Sure, who would want to make a phony hippopotamus foot?
