A private detective, hired by Jessica to research an old case, is suddenly murdered.

While highly respected P.I. Archie Miles, who taught at the police academy, is working on the old Danbury scalpel murder case for Jessica's research, he is shot in his office. His rather shady, clumsier partner, Harry McGraw, contacts Jessica as Archie was working on only two other cases, about allegedly adulterous contractor Ernie Santini and editor Priscilla Daniels of Femininity Magazine. Detective Lieutenant Starkey confides to Jessica the police wouldn't object to Harry getting rid of Archie's killer. She snoops herself, then teams up with Harry.—KGF Vissers

Jessica has hired a Boston private detective, Archie Miles, to investigate a 25 year-old murder she hopes to use as the basis of a book. Not long after having spoken to Miles for an update on the case, he is shot and killed in his office. Jessica is determined to find Archie's killer as is his partner in the detective agency, Harry McGraw. Archie was working on two other cases in addition Jessica's including trailing a construction contractor named Ernie Santini and Priscilla Daniels, the editor of a glossy magazine, with political ambitions. Private detective Harry McGraw's (Jerry Orbach) partner is killed while working at the office. His three current cases, including one for Jessica related to a book she is working on, are cleared up by McGraw and Fletcher. Two are found to be unrelated to the murder, but the third, research into the background of a magazine publisher who is running for public office, turns out to be the key to the crime. The publisher has hired the private eye to learn if he is able to uncover her darkest secret, an abortion, which he does. Another member of the detective agency staff discovers the file, kills the PI, and attempts to use the information to blackmail the publisher. Jessica solves the case by comparing the jangling of the suspect's keys as recorded at the time of the murder with a recording made by Jessica while in the office with the suspect.
