The Heiress

It's not Henry James, nor is it Washington Square, but the day after the night after, David and Maddie are tasked by an heiress with determining the veracity of her poor fiancé's love for her. Her father opposes her engagement believing the bartender suitor to be a fortune hunter.

The episode's heavy hitter of a counterpoint to the detectives' exhilarating romance is the wonderfully acerbic William Hickey, fresh off his Oscar-nominated role in John Huston's Prizzi's Honor (1985). Hickey is as sly as ever and dominates the few scenes he's in with his growl of a voice and creepy demeanor. I had to wonder why he took this role at all, and it just has to be because he and Moonlighting were both cultural phenoms of the late eighties.

This episode is like a mixed drink that starts a bit sweet and ends like a squint of lime that hits your tastebuds and your eye at the same time. Enjoy!
