The Next Murder You Hear

This is the best episode so far - a truly excellent episode of Moonlighting - from the very beginning of the episode, with its wonderful connective shots of various people listening to a late night lonely-hearts type radio host. Gregg Henry does a great job in the role of the radio host. The direction and pacing, especially of the first five minutes of set up, are perfect. These people all seem to be connected and the viewer is drawn in as well. It is very magnetic.

The transition to the following day, and the beginning of the investigation, is also well done - the pacing is just right throughout, and we clip along nicely.

The dialogue is very well done too. There are some episodes of Moonlighting in which there is too much dialogue, too fast, and the characters talk over one another. There is a little of that here, but not enough to be annoying. This episode nails the formula precisely.

The music is atmospheric and perfectly captures the noir-ish feel of the episode. The writing is excellent, thoughtful, humorous, and the plot is engaging. David's steam-of-conscious monologue scene in the bar is definitive of the show, classic!

This is a solid episode - not only the best so far, but one of the best of the series.
