Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Hello. My name is Michael Anthony. I was Executive Secretary to John Beresford Tipton, who owned properties and buildings, railroads and gold mines, all over this world. But his home, if you could call it a home, was here

[Pointing generally to an area in the northwestern United States, around the Pacific Northwest]

Michael Anthony : . It wasn't on any map, but if you wanted to send him a postcard, the only address you would need was John Beresford Tipton, Silverstone, U.S.A. This is Silverstone, where he died a few years ago, leaving me free to tell you a little about him. He lived alone, but he was never bored because he had so many hobbies. Giving away a million dollars was one of them. This particular day, I remember, he was painting. John Beresford Tipton was completing a self-portrait. But when it was finished, to satisfy his standard of perfection, he would destroy it, as he had the others.

  • Fred Malcolm : [In his home, staring at a cashier's check]  A million dollars. Why, I've never imaged anything like this. Yet I assume this must be real.

Michael Anthony : I assure you it is.

Fred Malcolm : When I started working, I always thought that at this stage of life, I'd have a million dollars.

Michael Anthony : [Looking around in this upper middleclass house]  You haven't done too badly.

Fred Malcolm : I've actually got it. Now I can...

    [Stops]

Fred Malcolm : Now that I've got it, I've forgotten what to do with it.

Michael Anthony : [Presenting a document]  If you'll sign this form, it'll show you accept the conditions.

    Fred Malcolm : Conditions?

Michael Anthony : As I explained, the million dollars is yours, tax-free. The only condition is that you tell no one but your wife.

Fred Malcolm : [Signs the pledge]  No one but my wife. My wife.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  I have no way of knowing how John Beresford Tipton selected his millionaires or his half-finished canvas to guild. But let me picture it for you.

  • Michael Anthony : [Entering a studio where Tipton was seen holding an artist's palette, dabbling and painting on a portrait on an easel]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, you know that everyone has a predominating color or a combined aura of colors that expresses his personality. What would you say my color was?

Michael Anthony : Well, of course, your hair is gray.

John Beresford Tipton : And so am I, Mike - gray and tired. Content to sit back and watch other people's brighter colors.

    [Returning to his palette]

John Beresford Tipton : Gold is a strange and powerful color, Mike. Sometimes it adds brilliance, other times it clarifies man's true colors, sometimes it only tarnishes. Let's see what my gold does to a person I've selected

    [Handing an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : . Bring back a portrait of the man and his own basic tones of cool blue, jealous green, angry red, and my gold.
