Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony
Quotes
-
Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton estate art gallery, where he finds Tipton admiring a painting. Tipton is hidden from the viewers by a pillar] You sent for me, sir?
John Beresford Tipton : [Indicating the painting] Look at her, Mike. Isn't she lovely?
[Tipton identifies the painting]
John Beresford Tipton : "The Sleeping Beauty." Probably the most romantic legend of all-time.
Michael Anthony : [Anthony steps closer to examine the painting] Ah, yes, a lovely girl awakened by a kiss.
John Beresford Tipton : A kiss from the right man.
Michael Anthony : Yes, of course.
[Smiling]
Michael Anthony : Naturally.
John Beresford Tipton : Mike, what if she hadn't awakened?
Michael Anthony : [Anthony furrows his brow as he thinks] I don't think I'd like the story quite as well, sir.
John Beresford Tipton : No, I s'pose not. Let's, um, let her sleep, Mike.
[Anthony turns off the light illuminating the painting. Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]
John Beresford Tipton : Here. Our next millionaire.
[Anthony bows and departs]
-
[first lines]
Michael Anthony : [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony, and until his death, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had the strange hobby of giving away $1,000,000. One million dollars, tax-free, to an individual who had never met him, who indeed had never even heard of him. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate. Mr. Tipton was a man of amazingly wide interests - so wide that one never knew what to expect when called into his presence.
-
Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters a restaurant kitchen, where David Barrett is washing dishes] Mr. David Barrett?
David Barrett : Yes.
Michael Anthony : Mr. Barrett, I'm Michael Anthony.
[Anthony starts going though his briefcase]
Michael Anthony : I, uh, have something here for you: From an anonymous benefactor,
[Displaying the check]
Michael Anthony : a cashier's check for $1,000,000, tax-free.
David Barrett : [Continuing to wash dishes] My hands are a little wet. Would you put it over there?
[Indicating a shelf near the sink. Anthony complies]
Michael Anthony : There is one stipulation
[Returning to his briefcase]
Michael Anthony : Under no circumstances may you divulge either the source or the amount of this money, except your wife should you marry.
[Displays the document]
Michael Anthony : If you break this condition, the remainder of the money will revert to your benefactor.
David Barrett : [Still disbelieving] I... I'll... I'll tell you what, Mister, I'm, uh, a little busy right now, and, uh, I gave my financial secretary the afternoon off. Ah, if I were to sign this check over to you, how much would you give me for it in cold cash?
Michael Anthony : [Perplexed] I'm afraid I... I couldn't, uh, enter into such a negotiation as that.
David Barrett : That's what I figured.
Michael Anthony : But,
[Anthony reaches for his wallet]
Michael Anthony : if you'll just sign this agreement, I'll be glad to lend you
[Producing his wallet with money sticking out]
Michael Anthony : a few hundred until the banks open in the morning. You seem to have an honest face.
[Barrett finally reads the document and examines the check]
David Barrett : [Finally dawning on him] This is for real.
[Barrett signs the agreement. Anthony nods]
-
Michael Anthony : [to the viewers] David Barrett was not the easiest man in the world to find. He was an itinerant, with no reason for leaving a forwarding address.
