Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. And for many years, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who practically held the financial world in the palm of his hand. This is Silverstone, the capital of that financial world. But it was only of minor interest to John Beresford Tipton, a man of so many interests and hobbies. All kinds of unusual hobbies: pedigreed cats and ordinary people, and giving away a million dollars.

  • Michael Anthony : [Hendricks enters his office where he finds Anthony seated in a chair, awaiting him]  Mr. Hendricks? Mr. Brian Hendricks?

    Brian Hendricks : Yes.

Michael Anthony : [Opens his briefcase]  I have something for you, Mr. Hendricks.

Brian Hendricks : Okay. Let's get it over with.

Michael Anthony : This is for you.

[Anthony hands a check to Hendricks]

Michael Anthony : A million dollars.

Brian Hendricks : [Looking at check]  What is this? Aren't, aren't you the...

    Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check for $1,000,000, tax-free.

    [Presenting a document]

Michael Anthony : And it's yours when you sign this paper, promising not to reveal its source to anyone but your wife. If you do, whatever is left will be reclaimed on behalf of the donor.

Brian Hendricks : Who'd give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : That you will never know, Mr. Hendricks. Now if you will, uh, sign right here.

Brian Hendricks : [Examines check closely]  But... what if... that's not a joke. It's a cashier's check for a million dollars. I, I, I can live!

Michael Anthony : Yes, you can really live on a million dollars.

Brian Hendricks : No, I can really live. I, I don't have to die.

[Anthony furrows his brow, confused. Hendricks signs the pledge]

    Brian Hendricks : It's a miracle! It's a miracle! That's what it is - a miracle!

[Anthony returns the agreement to his briefcase while Hendricks carries on]

Brian Hendricks : You'll forgive me for rushing off this way. I should take you to lunch or something, but I've got to tend to something that's really a matter of life or death.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the library and discovers Tipton, seated in a high- back chair at his desk, stroking a black cat. Only Tipton's hands are visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, they say all cats are gray in the dark. Do you believe that?

Michael Anthony : Well, I'm not sure about it in the literal sense, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : [continues petting his cat]  This one is black at midnight as he is at noon, so they must be wrong. For instance, they say that, chemically speaking, man is only worth 98 cents.

    [Handing envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Let's see if we can buy one for a million dollars.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  His name was Brian Hendricks, and he already seemed to have all a man could want out of life - a comfortable home, a healthy family, and a pretty wife.
