***SPOILERS*** It's when Mike Hammer's, Stacy Keach, good friend Father Dressler, Jack Betts, whom he knew since he was a kid was murdered in his church that he took a keen interest in a number of hookers who Father Dressler was trying to help who've been murdered by a "Jack the Ripper" like killer in the neighborhood. Known as the "Hooker Priest" Father Dressler tried to straighten out their lives before they end up either drug addicted or in the city morgue.
The connection to their and Father Dressler's murders was a wooden cross found on all of then that was manufactured by his church and given away free to those that attended it! Hammer after working over one of the murdered hooker's pimp Slick, John Cassini, is in returned worked over by Slick's goons making this, solving Father Dressler's murder, a very personal matter. In fact it's later that Slick himself is killed after arranging, with a gun to his head, by phone a secret meeting with Hammer in an deserted factory to expose who the killer is!
