Another Quality Episode
slightlymad2230 October 2014
Another quality episode of "Married With Children" in Season 5.

Plot In A Paragraph: Al is forced to get a night job as a security guard at his old high school, Polk High. Due to being laid off while the store is being repaired after a second floor aerobics studio, full of overweight women, collapses into the shoe store. This prompts his former high school rival, Spare Tire Dixon (Bubba Watson), to steal his prized trophy which leads to a brutal showdown.

Katey Segel is OK as Peggy, Davd Faustino is given a bit more to do as Bud, but not much more. Amanda Bearse and Ted McGinley aren't given as much to do as one would hope. Likewise the gorgeous Christina Applegate. But that's OK because once again Ed O'Neil is the star of the show as Al Bundy. He is hilarious. Not just his delivery of lines, his physical comedy is great too. His face off with Bubba Watson (Hightower from the "Police Academy" movies) is comedy gold.

Season 5 of Married With Children is the show at the height of it's greatness.

Branded as a Fool!

Al gets a job at Polk High as the night security guard after an accident befalls the shoe store when an aerobics studio opens up. So Al gets the job and suddenly has a uniform, he remembers an old high school rival football team where their quarterback still has a grudge against the Polk football team for losing the city championship. Al recalls the championship game. Suddenly during one of Al's bathroom visits, a robbery and burglary takes place and stealing the trophy. He is branded by the principal in a hysterical moment where she removes his security guard patches and sends him out in shame for being a failure. It's an interesting episode when he meets Bubba Smith who plays his rival. They discuss their quality of life.

This is a Great Episode!

Things start out with Al coming home to Peggy and telling her that he has been temporarily laid off from the shoe store. He then goes off on a riff about the obese women he holds responsible for it, not very nice but still funny.

Peggy of course is unsympathetic and soon Kelly and Bud, then Marcie and Jefferson, show up and an insult-fest against Al occurs. Talk about "piling on"! But it is appropriate I guess since the episode soon turns football themed.

Unemployed Al ends up as a night watchman at Polk High where he has the opportunity to relate to Bud and his current love interest Trixie* (played with trashy perfection by actress Dorit Sauer) "The Story". This tale of Al's former athletic glory is somewhat interesting and engaging, especially him running over rival player Spare Tire Dixon, to score the winning touchdown and win the 1966 City Football Championship. If not to Bud and Trixie, to this reviewer at least.

Alas Al screws up and gets canned after just one night on the job. The reason being, that night multiple burglars descend on Polk High and steal the place blind, including the trophy from the 1966 championship.

Three days later Al is contacted by Spare Tire, played by Bubba "Tastes Great/Less Filling" Smith. Smith displays his usual likeable mix of dry humor and slight air of menace. Anyway, Spare Tire has the trophy and believes Al's touchdown was not valid, and wants to meet in person about it. Al accepts. After a humorous race to the bottom between the two of them where they argue over who has had more of a disappointing life since their days of high school stardom ended, Spare Tire challenges Al to a physical contest for the Trophy. Who wins? No spoilers here, you will have to watch the episode for yourself!

*Like all of Bud's love interests it seems, Trixie doesn't bother to hide her distain for him - poor Bud.

Al vs Spare Tire, round two.
BA_Harrison24 November 2022
When the second-floor aerobics studio at the mall plays Van Halen's Jump, the building can't take the strain: the floor gives way, collapsing into the shoe store below, almost killing Al.

While the damage is being repaired, Al is laid off, and so he finds alternative work as a security guard at Polk High. While Al takes a toilet break, the school's valuables are stolen, including the football trophy that Al won when he was a teenager. Al tracks down the culprit: Spare Tire Dixon (Bubba Smith, Hightower from the Police Academy films), his rival from Andrew Johnson High School, who believes that the trophy is rightfully his.

Al and Spare Tire reliving their football showdown is a lot of fun, the guys battling it out in 'slow motion' and using photos of their mother-in-laws as weapons, but for me David Faustino is the real star of this episode, Bud getting the biggest laughs as he tries to make progress with a girl. Bud's best lines: "Dad, she's not wearing a bra." and "Does the term 'sympathy feel' mean anything to you?". The lad's desperation is hilarious!
