This is confirmed in the DVD extras by Bryan Cranston, which explains that they didn't care about the ratio change (from 4:3 to 16:9) during the pilot shoot, which explains many goofs.
In the pilot, when Lois is doing the laundry and the doorbell goes, as she goes to answer the door you can see someone move the laundry basket out of her way and try and hide behind a wall.
