Francis holds an old voodoo doll of The Commandant with a pin in the eye. This might explain how The Commandant lost his eye.
The song playing on the TV in the cold opening is a version of They Might Be Giants "Why Does The Sun Shine?" which was part of the Here Comes Science released in 2009
The film shown during the montage is Planet of Dinosaurs (1977)
The 'cold open' for this episode is a clear satire on the controversy over whether violent images in television and games causes violent behaviour. At the beginning, while playing a game that sounds violent indeed, the boys are politely sharing snacks and complimenting each other on their gaming skills. Lois enters, reprimands the boys for playing violent video games when she's told them not to, reminds them that "these games are too violent", and changes the television to a kids educational program. She leaves the living room while an unseen performer is singing an insipid song, "The sun is a mass of incandescent gas . . ." Immediately, the boys start fighting with each other. "Give me more chips," Dewey demands. Reese fires back, "Get your own, doofus."
Here, Eric Stonestreet plays the role of Phil. In Modern Family he plays the role of Cameron whose husband, Mitchell is brother-in-law with Phil.
