    A Really Red Scare!

A U.S. Senator's aide comes to camp, trying to root out communists. At the top of his list is Major Houlihan. When she was in nursing school, she spent time with a young man, Wally, who was a part of a "suspicious" organization. Now this guy wants Margaret to implicate people she had fun with when very young. Apparently, this is a kind of Joe McCarthy thing (which was going on at the time this episode was set). Margaret is put between a rock and a hard place because by not implicating these people, she will herself appear un-American. Of all the people that they could have chosen, Margaret would be the least likely to have something to do with a political movement. The guys come to her defense but it is hard for her to find a way out, even though she's done nothing. Just a taste of what it must have been like in the early fifties.

    • Trivia
The title comes from the "Red hysteria" of the 1940s and 1950s: a witch hunt led by junior Senator Joseph McCarthy, where anyone could be accused of being a Communist and could be summoned before a Congressional committee. Those summoned were asked, "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" Even appearing could ruin the professional and public reputation of the witness regardless of whether he or she cooperated, admitted membership in the Communist Party, and/or named additional people as suspected members. The committee referenced many times by the characters was the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).

When the Congressional aide first visits the swamp, while BJ is lying in his cot, where the tent is cut away to allow for the cameras, the sky is visible in the top right corner.
    • Quotes

Congressional Aide R. T. Williamson: But I want you to know, that you have been duped by a Communist sympathizer.

Maj. Charles Winchester: What a coincidence, so have you!
