    Nice guys finish last

Assuming you seen the episode or read the others review. I love this show and the warmth of the characters however in this episode Mary was not so nice. She snubbed the nice guy Patrick to hang out with his egocentric boss Cass. Patrick tried to win her prize but she wasn't appreciative of his efforts. After continually being rejected Patrick was rooting g for her needlework to win. Yes, Patrick was wrong to cut the air ballon, whether he knew or not Carrie climbed in, but he admitted his wrongdoing. Cass only cared about his ballon and not Carrie's well-being. Then Mary started being nice to him again and brushed off Cass. I thought Mary was blind in this episode because Patrick is way cuter than Cass.(This has nothing to do with episode, just my mere observation).

I don't understand why Carrie would lie down in an air ballon, especially when she thought it was a ride.

Also, when Laura plays the game the gentleman never showed her the nut under the shell before shuffling.

    another of my faves

    First issue:

There are these two boys. Patrick is your typical Mary-type boy. He's a farmer, ordinary, and goes to school in Walnut Grove. There's nothing extraordinary about him, but he is a really nice boy. the second boy (or man) is Cass. He's dreamy. He runs the balloon stand. He is a slick talker and really into Mary. He's charming, but as it turns out he's a real jerk. Mary pics the right one in the end.

    Second issue:

There a pick pocket at the fair. Several people find their money stolen such as Willie and Patrick. But the joke is on the pick pocketer at the end, probably the best part of the entire episode!

    Third issue:

All Carrie wants to do is ride the horse ride. Laura is told by her father to put Carrie on the ride. The first time she leaves, she wants to see the balloon take off. The second time, she goes after their dog. Poor Carrie gets into some mischief.

This is a fun episode. It shows the lighter side of life. I'm sure fun days like this were very few and far between for Pioneers back then, so it's refreshing to think that maybe...just maybe...once in a blue moon they could get away from the hard life and just enjoy themselves.

By the way, there are several uncredited people in this episode. I don't think the lady carrying the suitcase is identified, as well as some of the barkers and some other unknown people at the fair.

Kind of cute story but lazy with creepy casting

Cass - the balloon guy who charms Mary at the fair - is so creepy and gross. If cast in the 2000s, that actor would be a creepy pervert of today or a failed porn actor of the 1970s. His Irish accent is even revolting.

Best scene: just watch Nels Oleson ride a donkey with Charles Ingalls!!! 😆

Carrie: Poor little Carrie and the actresses who play her. Little House is part of my best childhood memories but even then Carrie just stood out as poor casting and poor writing for her character - the dog's storyline is more complicated.

    • Trivia
Laura (Melissa Gilbert) tricks Nellie (Alison Arngrim) into sitting in the dunking tank. Four seasons later, her adopted sister Nancy (Alison Balson) would also be tricked into sitting in a dunking tank.
    • Goofs
When Patrick is hanging under the balloon trying to bring it back down with Carrie in it, tire tracks from the camera truck and/or the vehicle towing the balloon are visible in the grass.
    • Quotes

Patrick: It was all my fault.

      Cass McCray: Your fault?

Patrick: Yeah. I cut them. I didn't know she was in there.

Cass McCray: You cut them? What for?

Patrick: I was mad... jealous... I'm sorry.

Cass McCray: Sorry wouldn't have patched a hole in that balloon if you had torn it. It's lucky for you it's alright or I would have had your skin for it!

Mary Ingalls: He risked his life to save it.

Cass McCray: No. He wasn't trying to save the balloon. He was trying to be a hero.

Mary Ingalls: And all you care about is your balloon. Well, you just go to your balloon and leave us alone.
