In "On the Banks of Plum Creek", Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote that Pa purchased his land, and dugout house, from a Mr. Hanson. However, the Ingalls stayed for less than two years in Walnut Grove, before moving west.
Charles is angry and offended when the Olsen's refuse him credit by suggesting there was a risk he might pack up and disappear and not pay what he owed. However, this is exactly what the real Charles Ingalls did, on at least one occasion, when some of his various schemes were unsuccessful and he couldn't pay his debts.
