- Detectives Goren and Eames investigate a copycat murder with telltale signs that it was committed by someone connected to an incarcerated serial killer.
- When a woman is found murdered in a hotel room with the same signature as an accused serial killer awaiting trial behind bars, Detectives believe it to be the work of a copycat. Considering that details of the case have been kept strictly under wraps, and the accused killer, Reddick, has had no visitors other that attorneys and psychiatrists, aids Detectives in limiting the suspect pool. Once Goren and Eames discover that Reddick is involved in a clinical study linking a brain lesion to rage killing, they grow to suspect that one of the doctors conducting the study committed the copycat killing, but find the reason shocking.—Lynne Boris Johnston
- Kevin Reddick was arrested for five murders of women, and imprisoned on circumstantial evidence. Months later, a sixth woman is murdered in the same way and Reddick's defense attorney claims that the real killer is still out there. While investigating the latest murder, Goren and Eames realize that the victim was a lesbian and that she had a one-night stand with a female killer. Figuring that Reddick had instructed someone to become a copycat killer and to clear his name, their suspicions fall on Dr. Cathleen Dwyer. Dwyer is an uptight medical researcher who has had frequent contact with Reddick as they both are taking part in a medical study involving brain scans. Dwyer has had a secret obsession with BDSM for years, and lets herself be dominated by Reddick. She is intrigued by how he seems to guess some of her deepest secrets, unaware that her former mentor and lover is feeding information to Reddick. Goren starts suspecting that someone is manipulating both Reddick and Dwyer for his own purposes, but he has to find out who is using the duo's murders to cover up another crime.—Dimos I
