Comfort and Joy
nothimme1 October 2017
Damn right, this is the exact definition of the episode ''Comfort and Joy'' not much fight or war compared to the other episodes, just NICE and COZY. Of course, there were some dark telling and sadness in it, in fact, this episode almost perfect because of these two, seeing J'onn J'onzz like that was just sad.

Also, the mood in this episode was perfect and it was completely different from other episodes, I don't know why but I really liked it. There is no way you will hate this.

An episode to bring Comfort and Joy
EddyTheMartian00725 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The DCAU has made a few christmas specials, but I don't remember any of them as fondly as this one. To be honest I barely remember any other christmas specials in general, but this is definitely my favorite from memory. It's a small little singular episode with no need for more parts. I also like how this is the penultimate episode before the 3 final episodes, and it acts as a nice calm before the storm.

There are 3 main story threads, that intercut throughout, of varying quality.

Probably the weakest plot thread, which slightly brings the episode down for me, was the one with Green Lantern and Hawkgirl. GL has a snowball fight reminding him of his childhood, though Hawkgirl doesn't get it, which leads them to go to another planet to have a bar fight essentially. It just felt out of place compared to the others, and didn't really get properly resolved. GL was clearly not having a good time, but they just end it with Hawkgirl telling him Merry Christmas while he's passed out. I guess the message is to let your partner enjoy their "traditions" even if you don't agree, but I just think that storyline was a big rushed and unclear. I honestly did not remember this storyline whatsoever.

The next 2 storylines are amazing though. The Flash tries looking for a gift for orphans. I love how it seems like a tradition for Flash to do this. Unfortunately when he finally gets it Ultra-Humanite breaks it, but even Ultra-Humanite, who gets some great dialogue this episode, finds a heart to fix it for the uncorrupted youth. I love how Ultra-Humanite initially criticizes Christmas' sometimes shallow nature, but recognizes the importance of it for the children later. It shows that just the belief can be good. It's not only touching, but funny when Ultra-Humanite records himself in the toy to tell stories. I kind of liked it when he made the poopy noise too though, Flash. The only problem I had with this part is that Flash gives the kids the toy without being sure it's not an explosive or something. I mean it's played off as a joke, but that is a real concern. Regardless it ends beautifully with Flash giving Ultra-Humanite a gift of his own reminding him of his past.

Finally probably my favorite one of these storylines, though the last one comes close, is Clark bringing J'onn to spend Christmas with his family as he has never celebrated it before. I love how accepting the Kent's are and it makes perfect sense as Clark is an alien too after all. Seeing Superman still acting childish and excited for christmas is just adorable. They really got superman right in the DCAU. I love the little jokes with them wrapping the presents in lead so that Clark can't peek. There's just so many little gems this episode, like when J'onn grows into the sweater. Does Superman still believe in Santa? Checkmate Santa Deniers. What makes this storyline truly special is how humanized Martian Manhunter is. I feel like many people overlook him, but the DCAU and this episode specifically really made me love him, and he has since become one of my favorite characters. This episode is not all Joy, I like how J'onn isn't just instantly festive, he doesn't know how to deal with this. In so little time we see how J'onn learns about christmas by seeing other people enjoy it. J'onn helping the girl who is doubting Santa is real (THOSE EVIL SANTA DENIERS!) by going on the roof and eating the cookies is just so sweet. I also love the easter egg to him enjoying what seems like Oreos, since that's a nice callback to the comics. It's so sad to see the cat just hiss at him at first, but it makes it so much more impactful when we see him singing with the cat at the end.

Overall, this is just a great self contained christmas special. I can't imagine why people wouldn't like this. It's sweet and fun for children, and still has some maturity for adults to enjoy. It does have a few problems like I mentioned, particularly the GL and Hawkgirl plot line. Don't forget the omission of Batman and Wonder woman. It makes sense Batman wouldn't appear as he has multiple christmas episodes, but I wish we got something with Diana. Those aren't really anything that break the episode at all though, especially with some strong humanization of the characters, and even a villain. Definitely a great episode, and one I've rewatched, and will rewatch multiple times.

A tradition of morals...
necrodiem6 April 2021
Anyone who attempts to critically critique or dissect a children's cartoon is on a toxic level of ridiculousness. This is a culmination of several classic and touching Christmas carols woven into a story of morals and family tradition. It focuses on overcoming loneliness and quality over gimmick. So few of our modern media influences on our children take the time to instill morals, Life choices and progressive thinking. Not to mention that Justice league is one of the best produced animated series of its time and I don't remember any episode as being not worthwhile.

Perfect Holiday episode!
tio_shiayotote25 November 2021
I'm currently rewatching and falling in love again with this show and this episode in particular is one of my many favorites.

First of all , it's not meant to be as a shocking or life changing episode , it's not supposed to blow your mind or keep you at the end of your seat. It's a nice episode that just wanna have a good time with their cast as they all have a different , yet equally enjoyable way of spending the holidays.

I love this episode because it shows you that this heroes , this gods that spend most of their time saving the world form mayor threats , they also have a human side to them (even if they're Martian or Thanagarian).

This is just a perfect light hearted and joyful episode for any fan of this show!

Superb and Sincere Christmas Episode
joesoapextremehacker25 December 2022
Opening the episode with the Justice League helping an alien species against a natural disaster is a nice change of pace and suits a Christmas episode.

Flash successfully convincing Ultra-Humanite to help the orphans was a fantastic showcase of his sincerity.

Martian Manhunter experiencing Christmas for the first time was a great milestone in his journey to adjust to Earth and humanity.

Green Lantern and Hawkgirl's barfight was a suitably unorthodox celebration of Christmas to contrast with the other sub-plots.

Would have loved to have seen a Batman and Wonder Woman, but there probably wasn't enough time to do it justice.

Jabberjaws49 should ask Santa for a brain.

A Merry Justice League Christmas
WillBeatz7 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Fantastic Christmas episode featuring the Justice League having a good time. After bonding over a snowball fight in the mountains, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl are shown traveling to a different world and fighting in a hilarious scene at a bar. The plot of The Flash is quite touching because it follows him attempting to give a toy that is sold out to several children at an orphanage. A Justice League episode wouldn't be complete without at least one villain making an appearance. When Flash appears, Ultra-Humanite starts demolishing a building. Flash breaks the toy for the kids and becomes upset, but he persuades Ultra-Humanite to at least have some Christmas spirit. He fixes the toy and the orphanage children have a happy Christmas. The story of Superman and the Martian Man Hunter is also entertaining; it depicts Superman and the Martian Man Hunter visiting Clark's house in Smallville and demonstrates how lonely the Martian is in real life. However, at the end of the episode, we witness him coming to understand and appreciate the Christmas spirit, as he is heard singing in the end of the episode because he overheard the song at a church. It's also entertaining to watch Clark attempt to use his x-ray vision to examine the gifts despite being filled with lead. The only Justice League episode that isn't a part, this one is a terrific Christmas special overall.

Comfort and Joy
jabberjaws4916 January 2017
Why do shows (especially like this one) always do Xmas episodes? They are always so predictable and TERRIBLE. Such a bad episode, for a show where they are almost all fantastic, this tarnishes Justice League's reputation a little. I have not seen one Xmas special of any show that was worth watching, American Dad comes close, because it isn't predictable, as Santa is portrayed as an ass hole who gets money by investing in toy stocks, and tries to kill the Smiths each year, but loses points for still having a message of good tidings and all that typical crap. The fact that they wouldn't let J'on alone for Xmas is infuriating and idiotic, as he doesn't celebrate the holiday, so it wouldn't bother him. It's not okay for him to be alone one night a year (December 25th), but it's okay for him to be alone in the watch tower almost every other night of the year? That's dumb. And crime doesn't take a day off for the holidays, but the heroes do? There are a lot of holes in this plot, and saying "it's Xmas" isn't a good why to cover them up. There wasn't even any sort of conflict in this episode, just poor writing. They might as well not have written one, and just do a normal episode, it would have been a lot better.
