"Top Gun" meets "A Few Good Man" meets "E.T." via "Close Encounters"

For me, looking at this episode 25 years on, this is quintessential JAG series one. Harm and Meg, working as a team, find a ridiculous set-up and make it look serious.

They play off each other (team-build), befriend the locals (community relations), dig around better than Mully and Sculder ever did (mystery and investigation). They then find the bad guys (resolution) and save the day (rah, rah, resolute, victorious heroic USN team watching Old Glory flying in breeze).

It was a pleasure to catch this episode again in July of 2021. Tracy Needham brought a lightness and intelligence which was, just slightly, lacking in Harm's team-mate over the next nine seasons - not that I would ever wish "JAG" to have been just a one-season wonder.

"Sightings"

Wings Hauser - father of Yellowstone star Cole - is a guest star in an episode that has Harm and Meg in Texas, though nowhere near the latter's home, about 200 miles to the north (so Meg says), investigating an old Naval base in the middle of nowhere after a bunch of local residents report hearing strange noises and seeing strange craft in the air, leading some to think there is UFO activity around. A suggestion Meg is more inclined to give credence to than Harm, whom she accuses of being close-minded.

For mine, one of the more preposterous of all the 200-odd JAG episodes. Too many plot holes and situations that had me shaking my head. The weakest episode of Season One so far.

A long way from 1996
This episode has visible green lasers. I didn't think they had those in 1996.

Funnyest line in the episode is: "Do you know how to use a cellular phone?" The girl saysa: "I'm only 10 years old".
