Those first couple of seasons of In The Heat Of The Night have the Sparta, PD getting used to a black detective and everyone getting used to each other. Things aren't so easy between Howard Rollins and aroll O'Connor and the rest.

There's been a rash of random gunshot incidents, drunken firing of a weapon at night. Only one of those firings kills a woman presumably killed by a stray bullet.

Only Howard Rollins is convinced they should look for a domestic motive and O'Connor and Alan Autry vehemently disagrees for different reasons.

Forensics and another attempted murder of a potential witness get this case solved. Some cast members have to eat crow.
