This episode revisits the business of Alice getting a job. In a previous episode, he was forced to do housework while Alice went to work. He was useless. In this one, it is out of necessity because Ralph has been laid off (surprisingly, it is his suggestion that leads to the layoff. There is a role reversal that shows a man of great self doubt and lack of trust. The boss finally shows up and he is a very handsome (for the time) older man and Ralph begins to fall apart. Fairly amusing episode.

One of Gleason's funniest roles

As always, convincing as the unpredictable, formidable? But pathetic Ralph Kramden. The ratings will go to the moon. And in all fifteen years at the bus company... Gleason had more empty threats in this one than ever. As empty and impractical as an Ed Wood sci-fi movie.
Alice Gets a Job

Solid entry. I love it when Ralph meets Alice's boss. He's not what Ralph was expecting, to say the least. Part of the series appeal, I think, is seeing a set-up develop into something that's going make our bus driver go ballistic. Here it's Alice's having to go to work after Ralph gets laid off. And guess who gets to do the housework. Worse, it was Ralph's own bright idea that led to his being laid off. Anyway, he doesn't like Alice's having to get a bill-paying job to begin with, and especially so after he meets her boss. It's amusing to watch the irritants build into a typical Ralph blow up. Of course, we know things will work out in the end, so we can sit back and enjoy his mock tantrums. Without that assurance, however, the amusement would be questionable. Also, look for John Holland as Alice's boss. He was a long-time actor in old movies and then TV, specializing in slippery upper-class types. Good seeing him pick up a payday here.
