- An old couple who run a milk bar in an inner suburb are found brutally murdered. A young man is charged, but some doubts about his guilt still complicate the issue, which brings Det. Sgt. Bronson and Inspector Connolly into conflict.
- The elderly owners of an inner suburban corner milk bar have been found brutally murdered. Joyce Paton (Judith Arthy), who had been lodging with the couple, is found locked in a shed behind the shop. She is taken to the police station, where she is interviewed by two detectives of the Homicide squad, Detective Rex Fraser (Lex Mitchell) and Detective Sergeant Frank Bronson (Terry McDermott).
Paton tells the detectives that she remembers nothing, except that someone bashed her on the head, and she woke up in the shed. Bronson asks Paton if she knows of any enemies that the shop owners may have had, and she replies that her ex-boyfriend, Bruce Wilson (Eric Coladetti), did not like them, and was convinced that they kept large amounts of cash hidden in the place.
Bronson and Fraser pay a visit to Wilson's flat and find him in a drunken stupor with a large amount of cash on him. They put him in the police car and bring him to the station, where they give him the third degree, but in spite of the heavy duty questioning, Wilson denies murdering the couple and insists that the cash is his.
The detectives canvas the area and find a witness, Herbert Floyd (Vic Haggith), who says that he saw Wilson leaving the back of the store that night. Wilson is put under arrest and charged with the couple's murder.
At the trial, the prosecutor (Keith Lee) hammers away at Wilson, stating that he killed the couple for their money, but Wilson denies all of the charges and pleads his innocence. Herbert's testimony proves to be the final nail in the coffin and leads to Wilson being found guilty.
However, Bronson begins to have some doubts about Wilson's guilt, having noticed that both Herbert and Paton have been flashing around more cash than they should have. He visits Betty Floyd (Pat Littlewood), Herbert's wife, and finds his suspicions confirmed when he sees that the flat where they live is full of new furniture.
Bronson takes his suspicions to his boss, Inspector Jack Connolly (John Fegan), but Connolly tells Bronson that the matter is closed because Wilson has now confessed to the murders. Bronson goes to the prison cell to visit Wilson and finds out that Wilson is convinced that he must have murdered the couple because everyone tells him that he did, even though he doesn't remember since he was drunk.
With Bronson's gut telling him that Herbert Floyd is the real killer of the couple, he asks Fraser to join him in a sting. They collect Paton for some further questioning, telling her that they know that she was in on the deal with Wilson. Under the questioning, she folds and agrees to take Bronson and Fraser to where they hid the cash.
Bronson takes one vehicle and parks it outside the Floyds' flat, while Fraser takes Paton in another car on a drive to where the cash is hidden. On the way, they stop to buy some petrol and Fraser tells Paton that he is going into the service station's shop to buy some cigarettes. Left on her own, Paton bolts down the street to the nearest public telephone, where she calls Herbert and tells him that he has to move the cash.
Unknown to Paton, she has been watched by Fraser all of the time from the service station, and it isn't long after she finishes her call to Herbert that she is collared again. When Herbert takes his car to the place where the cash is hidden in order to move it, he is followed by Bronson, leading the detective sergeant to the place where the cash is. A short fist fight ensues in which Herbert is relieved of the money by Bronson, who puts him in handcuffs. The detectives now have both of the real criminals and the proceeds of their crime.
With his innocence now proven, Wilson is released, and Paton and Herbert take his place in the cells. Bronson advises Wilson to lay off the booze for a while, because his drunken state had made him the perfect target for a set-up.
