The Tool Man Learns a Painful Lesson
ExplorerDS67897 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Looks like Tim has finally made it into the big leagues. It seems that after years of losing the National Home Builders Society award to Bob Vila, he's finally going to win! On Tool Time, before they can get around to discussing vices, Tim announces to the world that on the next show, he's going to officially break Bob Vila's record. Not only that, but Al and Heidi have a little surprise for the modest Tool Man: next show, they're going to be asphalting a driveway WITH a five-ton steamroller, which Tim will be operating. He was on top of the world, a prestigious award AND driving a steamroller with more power. What more could a man ask for? Tim graciously accepts these fine prizes and picks up a vice to simulate the award, but obviously he underestimated the weight of the instrument, resulting in a cataclysmic injury. Okay, he only separated his shoulder blade. He'll be laid up in the hospital for the duration, as the injury can be corrected with surgery. This would mean that not only could he not break Bob Vila's record on air, but he might not make the air show with Mark. Yeah, remember in Season 5 when he got interested in planes? This is a callback. Anyway, as Tim goes under for surgery, he fantasizes Bob Vila winning his award. When he recovers, he decides that winning was more important than resting, so he struggles to get out of bed, stagger over to the closet and somehow manage to get himself dressed. He manages to distract the doctor and then sneaks out of the hospital like a bandit in the night. Imagine Jill and boys' surprise when they arrive at the hospital to visit Tim only to find him gone. On a hunch, Jill turns on the TV.

Al and Heidi conduct the on-location asphalting project. Tim abruptly shows up via cab, hell-bent on breaking Vila's record and driving the steamroller. Al tries to protest, but Tim pulls rank and does it anyway. Surprisingly, Tim does the job successfully. He didn't crash AND he didn't break anything, except that record. Unfortunately, they have now officially jinxed the whole thing, for as Tim backs the roller into position, he runs over a little boy's remote controlled car. Naturally the kid is upset, but his big, bad dad is even more upset. So Tim lands back in the hospital, requiring surgery again. But this time the wounds run even deeper. He will definitely miss the air show, devastating Mark to probably incurable ends. So Tim goes under for his second operation, this time fantasizing that a psycho Wilson was performing brain surgery on him. When he recovers, he finds a way to make it up to Mark. He calls in some special favors and gets Lt. Commander Gray of the Blue Angels to personally come to the house and take Mark to the air show. He calls up his father and they make amends, and when Tim hears Mark will get to ride in the commander's jeep, he attempts to go AWOL from the hospital again, but a big, angry guard prevents him. To cap off the adventure, Tim has himself another medical nightmare: psycho Dr. Wilson is being assisted by maniacal Nurse Jill, and the chief of surgery is one angry little boy with a broken toy car.

Though some people may be torn about this episode's outcome, I do think Tim got a much-deserved lesson. He needed something to take him down a peg and as usual, his overconfidence was his undoing. Maybe getting beat up was a bit excessive, but you have to admit, the Tool Man was stirring up some bad karma. I'd say it was very satisfying, and I'm sure Tim learned another lesson. A pretty decent episode in its own right, a pretty basic, cautionary tale, reminding the viewers that if an injury is sustained that requires you to be in the hospital, it's best to stay put, lest you worsen the injury, as you could end up hurting other people besides yourself. So give this one a look and see Tim finally break Bob Vila's record...as well as a few other things.
