One of the commandos is played (uncredited) by actor Robert Hogan. The main character in the series was named after him by his friend, Hogan's Heroes (1965) co-creator Bernard Fein.
The mentioned attack on Rommel actually occurred on July 17, 1944. He would commit suicide on October 14th after being accused of being part of the July 20th assassination plot against Hitler rather than be tried so he could save his family and subordinates.
Sergeant Carter (Larry Hovis) confuses the nickname "The Galloping Ghost" for one of German Field Marshal Rommel's (The Desert Fox) nicknames. The other prisoners correct Carter by informing him that was Red Grange's nickname. Red Grange was a halfback for the University of Illinois and later played professional football for the (short lived) New York Yankees (football) team and the Chicago Bears.
The click-clack sounding cricket was famously used by US paratroopers during the D-Day Invasion of Normandy.
