Seems Contemporary For Its' Time

The last 2 seasons of Here's Lucy finally see the show shedding the overly-presentational, outdated style that was at odds with the fresh new CBS image that was being portrayed by All in the Family and Mary Tyler Moore. Lucille Ball's skiing accident forced the writers to rely more on funny dialog and less block comedy scenes where Lucy would clown with props on a big set piece. This made the shows seem more modern at the time and these later episodes have more in common style-wise with The Odd Couple or Laverne & Shirley than the mid-60s Lucy Show and earlier Here's Lucy seasons.

It's a nice change-of-pace and while this episode is not perfect or particularly hilarious it has some strong points. Fun to play spot-the-stars here. Dick Sargent (Bewitched) plays one of the policemen It's one of his best guest appearances and he seems relaxed and natural---ironic since he didn't make many live studio TV appearances.

Al Lewis (Car 54, The Munsters) appears as the henpecked husband of Lucy regular Mary Wickes. It struck me how tall he looks here. I guess seeing him next to Fred Gwynne made me assume he was much shorter.

Gino Conforti (Felipe on Three's Company) plays a frustrated burgular but the character isn't really that funny.

Not a classic by any means, but if you want to check out a Lucy episode to see what she was doing at the end of her long CBS career, this is one of the better ones.
