"Does the Word 'Amputation' Ring a Bell?"
kgraovac5 December 2023
Lucy mistakes Richard Burton for a plumber, and after having him fix the office sink, she finds he has left behind Liz Taylor's huge diamond ring, which she tries on and then cannot remove.

This is certainly the most famous/infamous episode of the series that Lucy fans all know generated a lot of press at the time and a LOT of backstage drama. Almost as much as the Joan Crawford episode of THE LUCY SHOW.

I rewatched this to see if my opinion had changed in nearly 20 years, and while it is VERY good, it's not among my absolute favorites of anything Lucy.

There are some decent jokes about Burton's persona. It's funny the first time Lucy's does a curtsy. Elizabeth's peeved expressions and attitude are great when she discovers what Lucy's done. The highlight of course is the press party that features the old hand-behind-the-curtain trick, which is done better here than anywhere else. My fave is the hand-slapping and choking gesture.

The chewing gum bit falls flat though, and "How's the missus" well.... misses. And what was with the costume department and Burton's coveralls. Why is he wearing a giant placard on his back?

Definitely one to see for the star power, but there are a few other HERE'S LUCY's that were more consistently funny.
