A bittersweet tale.

Edmund O'Brien stars as a writer named Ray. Ray has a book coming out and just before its release, he is shocked to see a woman who is EXACTLY like the main character in his story. He chases after her but loses her as she crosses the street. Later, however, they meet and he is shocked to see that she isn't LIKE the character, she IS the character! And, because she is the woman he created, he cannot help but fall in love with her. However, in the story, she is murdered...and he's worried that this will also happen to Jill (Joanne Woodward)!

In many ways, this film reminds me of the episode of "The Twilight Zone" where an author (Keenan Wynn) is able to describe characters on his tape recorder and they magically appear. This plot was played for laughs, whereas "Dark Stranger" is more of a romantic drama. Considering that two top actors (both who would become Oscar winners) star in this one, it's no wonder that it's well acted and quite enjoyable throughout.

Edmond O'Brien in the Twilight Zone

Yes, as the two reviewers wrote, it's obviously a pre twilight zone story. The entire episode relies on the book written by O'Brien, as soon as this book is to be released, he meets the girl from the story (young Joanne Woodward) . But O'Brien fights madly that the end doesn't happen. Edmond O'Brien has played in so many great films noirs and classics, I discover his work in TV with this jewel. It's nicely shot by George Diskant without too many effects.

A really little gem from a forgotten TV show.

Warning: Spoilers
I discovered it yesterday. I did not know this TV show, never heard of it before. And I guess there are thousands of this kind hanging somewhere in vaults. What a shame. All episodes with independent stories, with different characters in each of them. Crime, dramas, comedies, westerns, sci-fi...

This episode is about a novelist, fascinated by one of his character who, in real life, meets this very same character, a very beautiful woman. So, you can foresee what's going to happen. The lead - Edmond O'Brien - is disturbed by this weird situation, and wants his publisher to change the end of his last book, in which the woman character dies, so that this very heroin can survive. Live forever. This is the topic of this fascinating story. It is somewhere a blending of noir and "twilight zone" style story.

The ending is interesting, but we may have seen this kind of fall somewhere else.
