Easily the funniest episode in season one
Taargus_Taargus11 June 2017
This episode is hilarious. The only thing it lacks is more Sophia, but she has one great scene at the end. The ladies reminisce about how they met after Blanche posts an ad at the grocery store for roommates. The standout scene is watching the always amazing Betty White as Rose explain the "Great Herring War of Norway" to Blanche and Dorothy. She deadpans the whole thing while Bea Arthur and Rue McClananhan barely hold it together, then finally howl with laughter! They really ended the first season on a very high note.

The Way We Met (#1.25)

Warning: Spoilers
Having a sleepless night after watching Psycho the girls remember how they became roommates. Blanche put out an ad and Dorothy and Rose responded. After some considerations Blanche had them move in but their first shopping trip together made them question that decision. Yet a fun conversation and a cheesecake started their beautiful friendship.

A pretty fun looking back at how they met. I loved that kitty Rose had! Too bad she didn't kept it, the boy could have waited one week to save another cat from a shelter.

And their shopping trip was wonderfully funny. I would hate to shop with any of them.

Sophia who is not much on in this episode, still owns the scenes she is in with her hilarious lines and behavior.

The girls enjoy a good St. Olaf story. For the first and only time.

Warning: Spoilers
How do you get your mind off a scary movie, especially something as bloody and frightening as the original "Psycho"? It's the only movie apparently that scares Dorothy more than Stan's mother (Alice Ghostley in another episode), and the memory of the shower scene has them too frightened to go to bed. So the girls exchange remembrances of their initial meetings, with Blanche introducing herself to Rose in a supermarket (complete with cat that Rose has to get rid of), and the odd conversation that at first makes Blanche renege on her offer to rent Rose a bedroom in her beautiful home. But seeing Rose's kind side towards a child wanting to pet Rose's cat (and eventually adopting it), Blanche changes her mind. There's instant tension between Dorothy and Rose (more on Dorothy's part as she exclaims, "And you must be Mrs. Rogers!", overcome by Rose's extreme friendly nature, and not in a good way), and later their attempts to shop for groceries while splitting on the bills altogether. It's only thanks to Rose's inclusion of the Great Herring War story that the girls find a moment to laugh about something, and later the surprise that Rose has bought a cheesecake that brings them together.

Sophia's only a minor part of this episode, surprising them at the end after spending the bulk of the episode in bed, and accompanying Dorothy to see the home Dorothy wants to rent a room from. So we get to see Blanche meeting Sophia, although that leaves Rose out, and creates the confusion of who will be getting what room. There's no mention of Coco, either, and with Blanche having three other bedrooms, there is the assumption that he is there and will only move out after Sophia moves in. Still, it's a very good episode, probably because the "flashbacks" have never been seen before, and take place before the very first episode. Rose's story is perhaps her funniest St. Olaf story, although Bea Arthur as Dorothy over reacts in her enthusiastic laughing at the silly story. (Rue McLanahan, usually more over the top than Bea, reacts perfectly....) It makes me wish that there were "prequel" episodes that showed what had gone on (with or without Coco) prior to Sophia burning down her old folks home and moving in.

Flashback Episodes

I usually think flashback episodes are lame, but this one was good. It was material we had never seen. I think the episodes where the flashbacks contain scenes from previous episodes are lame. The only problem with this episode was the boy at the supermarket. He needed some serious acting lessons. LOL.

The Great Herring War explained.

'Those are very nice cantaloupes!'

Blanche reminisces about how she first met Rose and Dorothy. Where it all been for the trio of friends.

It's been a great first series, and was hoping it would end with a classic, I was not disappointed, this is a hilarious episode. It's loaded with all that's good about the show, sarcasm, wit, classic one liners, and of course Dorothy's death stares.

Flashback stories don't always work, but in this instance it works incredibly well.

There's something so magical about this show, I don't know why, but it reminds me of a much happier time, a less complex era, there's just something about the girls sat enjoying tea and cake, they are all so incredibly natural with one another.

Sophia with the knife, I'd have jumped out of my skin too.

Perfection.

10/10.

The series at its best
CubsandCulture6 June 2022
One of the surprising things about the first season of the Golden Girls is just how fully formed and sure handed the production was from the start. This concluding episode almost feels like a wonderful series finale instead of a season final episode. This has all the great tropes of the series-an inane Rose story (delivered in perfect deadpan by White), the late night cheese cake, Sophia being outrageous etc. And it works perfectly as a way to introduce the series to new people.

Season 1 overall has a ton of classic episodes and it set a high bar for the series to meet.

Cutting open cantaloupes
LaverneandShirleysucks5 January 2022
This is a great season ending episode showing how the girls all came to be together. I would've loved to see the scene where Blanche kicked out her old roommates who bathed each other and cleaned each other's teeth lol.

The only nitpick I have is Rose cutting open the cantaloupes in the market to check their freshness and tossing them aside afterwards and even eating one.

It seems out of character for her to do that because we see how honest she is at the checkout when she's correcting the cashier's mistakes and telling her the actual higher prices.

Someone like that wouldn't cut open cantaloupes and toss them aside the way she did. I could see Sophia doing it, but not honest goody two shoes Rose.

Other than that, it's fun to see how they all met and came to live together.

Psycho killer

What a way to close out season one, with some awesome throwbacks and one killer pop culture reference. Great chemistry, chocolate cheesecake, and a hilarious ending.
