RE: How can this be episode 22?
OllieSuave-00710 November 2012
This was actually the second episode filmed, but not released until later in the season. This explains the inconsistencies in the girls' appearances and with the house decorations. However, some of the continuity errors were never explained, such as Rose working at the diner (then suddenly back working at the Grief Center in later episodes after it supposedly closed down) and Rose mentioning her husband passed 15 years ago in the Pilot, but five years in this episode (which makes more sense). In addition, if you watch closely at the Pilot episode, Blanche's hairstyle changes from scene to scene. This is because the original pilot filmed had more scenes of Coco, the Housekeeper, in it. When it was decided that Coco would be dropped from the show, they re-shot the Pilot but kept some of the previously shot scenes of Coco in it. Job Hunting (#1.22)
ComedyFan201011 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The center where Rose works gets closed and she has no job. She continues helping people who came over to the center. When Dorothy and Blanche call her out on not looking for a job she says that she does but nobody wants her because she is "old". They motivate her and next day she gets a job as a waitress.

Wow, I couldn't believe Rose is 55! My mom is older. I always thought they were in the 60's, besides maybe Blanche and obviously Sophia. Must be the clothes they wore in the 80's and the hair styles.

Nice that they address a serious topic of ageism in the work market. It is still here unfortunately. Got some laughs from Rose's first time memories.

....On Mars, Rose.

Rose loses her job at The Centre, and struggles to move on, still visited by former patients, Dorothy steps in, and offers to help.

I enjoyed it, quite a lot, a funny scenario, with the enchanting Betty White taking the main part, as always, she was enchanting. Some wonderfully funny one liners, I loved 5hr midnight feast, and the scene where Dorothy chats with Milton was the standout moment, hilarious

I wish we'd gotten to see Barry, we've seen Stanley a few times, a pity we didn't get to see Dorothy's first love.

It was interesting to read that this was only the second episode filmed, I'm so curious as to why they left it so long until showing it, what could possibly have halted them. It's very good, but looks and feels rather different, Blanche in particular.

8/10.

How can this be episode 22?
mail-592311 September 2009
So I just watched episodes 1.21 and 1.22 back to back and there are several things that are different. Episode 1.21 shows green curtains and lighter cabinets, along with a table and telephone against the left kitchen wall. Episode 1.22 shows yellow curtains, no table or telephone on the kitchen wall, the living room seems darker and Sophia's glasses and hair is different. This would almost seem that this was more like episode closer to the beginning like 2 or 3. Can anyone shed any light on why there are so many differences? Was this episode originally not scheduled to air, then aired later on? Because then the episode 1.23 that follows return to the setting set in 1.21.

I wouldn't trust Dorothy to write my resume.

Warning: Spoilers
Rose has been laid off from her job at grief counseling and isn't motivated to really do anything after a few interviews where she realizes that her age (55 to Betty White's actual 64) is working against her. Her inactivity gets her into trouble with the girls, getting visited by former clients and calls pretty much day and night. When Rose has a breakdown over her issues, Dorothy steps in to help her which is the worst thing that could ever happen to Rose. Dorothy takes a look at Rose's resume and re-writes it in a way that would never ever get it looked at by any serious employer, let alone for a hospital administrator, a job that would obviously require more than Rose's minimal education and quite a bit more experience than Rose had in grief counseling. Even in 1986, employers wanted some sort of reference, and "32 years with the same employer" written down (in pencil!) is far too vague and incomplete. To top it off, Dorothy's declaration of "Now this is the resume of a potential hospital administrator!" takes away any credibility that Dorothy had established up to this point of the series. Irregardless of when this was filmed, the episode comes off as weak, not really well thought out, and simply tossed into the season airings when it just should have been shelved.
