- Ryan and Micki watch through a shop window as people parade on the street outside for the solstice carnival. When they want to go out, Jack says that he can't because he has an old friend coming over for the carnival. He says that his friend is a Legba: a high priest of a very old African religion. Jack explains that his friend's people believe that he's a link between their world and the world beyond. There are four Legbas, one for each of the four elements of air, earth, water, and fire. A Legba channels the energy between people and the spirits, Jack says that the spirits have to be fed with music, dancing, and sacrifices.
Jack says that his friend, Hedley, is the Legba of one of the four elements, fire, and the religion is voodoo. Hedley comes in behind the cousins and motions to Jack not to give his presence away. Jack says that the four Legabs are gathering for a solstice ceremony, and Hedley comes up and startles the cousins. After Jack introduces Hedley to Ryan and Micki, the two old friends hug as a woman, Stacy, comes in. Stacy and Ryan smiles at each other, and Jack remembers Stacy, Hedley's granddaughter. Hedley says that Stacy is preparing to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors, and Abul Legba will ordain Stacy that night in the voodoo mambo.
Jack congratulates Stacy and tells the cousins that priestesses are always ordained during the solstice. Stacy invites Micki and Ryan to join them at the ceremony, and Jack tells Ryan that voodoo is a very misunderstood religion. Hedley explains that they believe in the loa, the voodoo spirit that is believed to live in the throat. They go out to check out the carnival and Stacy tags along with them.
A man, Carl Walters, leaves a meeting. An older man, David Rhodes, follows him and says that he's risking not hearing the bad news. Carl tells Rhodes that he's going home, and Rhodes says that he doesn't have one. Rhodes, a lawyer, explains that as the executor of Carl's father's estate, he's taken the liberty of selling the estate. He tells Carl that he squandered the family fortune in Haiti, and the only thing the creditors had to take was the estate. Carl is furious, but Rhodes tells him that there's nothing he can do. Rhodes tells Carl that he disgraced the family name and the world stopped owing him a living.
Carl drives back to the house and sees the "for sale" sign outside. He goes inside and figures someone is there because the front door is unlocked. A real estate agent, Jennifer Sands, comes in and introduces herself. She has all the necessary paperwork, including a notice of eviction, and tells Carl that the locks have been changed. Jennifer tells Carl that he should leave within the hour, and they'll fix it up and sell it. When Carl threatens her, Jennifer threatens to call the police on him if he doesn't leave.
Once Jennifer leaves, Carl goes to the basement to get whatever he can to take with him. He finds a crate containing a glowing object. Opening it, Carl finds an antique voodoo mask. Carl puts it on, while upstairs, Jennifer waits for him. She finally goes to the basement to find him, and the masked Carl steps out of the shadows and approaches her. Jennifer threatens to call the police, and the mouth of the mask opens and a snake slithers out. It rips out Jennifer's throat and retreats back into the mask. Carl pulls off the mask and stares at the corpse in horror. The voice of the former Legba of water, Laotia, offers to show Carl his true inheritance. Her face appears on the mask, and Carl stares at the image in shock.
At the carnival, Ryan asks Stacy why she would want to practice voodoo. Stacy says that it's her religion and her parents were priests and died when she was a bay. She says that they believe that the dead are among the parents.
As Carl cleans up the blood, Laotia tells him that she was the one who made his father's plantation flourish. She assures Carl that no one can harm him while they are one, and he can regain everything he's lost. Laotia tells him that if the mask tastes light, then it will do Carl's bidding. She explains that four priests, the guardians of the elements, stand in Carl's way. He has to kill them and then the universe will be at his command.
Micki walks with Jack and Hedley, and Hedley explains that as the "Fireman", he's entrusted with the care of his element. Abul Legba, the guardian of the air, protects the wind and the bird. Dyzon Legba protects the water, and Cayon Legba protects the earth. Hedley calls Stacy over and says that it's time for her ceremony. Ryan starts to go with her, but Hedley tells him that the first part of the ceremony is private and he can join Stacy later.
Later at the ceremony, Abul banishes the evil spirits. Carl appears, wearing the mask, and kills Abul with the snake from the mask. Jack and the others hear Abul's screams, and they come over. Meanwhile, Stacy stares at Carl, who glides back into the shadows. The others come over and Jack realizes that someone has stolen Abul's soul.
The next morning at Curious Goods, Hedley says that the God of Death, Guede Nibo used a snake to kill Abul, swallowing her soul. Hedley explains that there is an ancient legend that a dead person can be reborn if Nibo can gather four souls. The more powerful the soul, the more powerful the reborn spirit will be. A Legba's soul would be extremely powerful. Stacy asks Hedley to tell the trio the story, but he says that he can't. Stacy says 20 years ago in Haiti, a powerful Mambo named Laotia convinced the local plantation workers that she could take their souls. The plantation owner, Jeremiah Walters, paid Laotia well to terrorize the workers and make them work harder. She was finally stopped, drowned, but not before she killed many who opposed her. Hedley dismisses the legend as an old story, and says that Stacy must finish her ceremony before the night ends.
As Hedley goes, Jack asks if there's something more they should know. Hedley merely says goodbye and leaves, and Jack finds a snake mask antique listed in the manifest, with Jeremiah Walters as the purchaser.
In the street, Stacy figures that the snake was the avatar of Nibo. She insists that she saw Laotia in the mask and felt her. Hedley insists that isn't possible, and Stacy reminds him that he told her that a similar mask killed her parents. The spirit she saw matched Hedley's description of Laotia, and Hedley says that Laotia murdered the parents with their own superstition and the mask had no magic. Stacy demands to know what happened, and Hedley warns her that he's not sure if he knows the truth of what happened.
At the shop, Ryan finds information on Jeremiah. He died 14 months ago, and Jack figures that the store transformed the mask from a symbol of evil into an active tool that possesses the power of Guede Nibo. Jack says that Lewis freed one of the spirits, and Hedley can tell them how to fight it. While Jack tries to get more info from Hedley, Micki and Ryan will check out Jeremiah's address. Jack wonders why Hedley doesn't want to tell them the story of what happened 20 years ago.
The cousins drive to the Walters house and find the front door unlocked. They go in and look around, while outside, Carl pulls up and sees the flashlight beams. Meanwhile, the cousins check out the basement and find Jennifer's corpse put up in the rafters. Ryan finds her purse and the papers signed by Rhodes, and the cousins quickly leave. Carl watches them go from the shadows, and Laotia tells him to let them go. She insists that there is no danger, and the soul they took from Abul has made the mask stronger.
Laotia has Carl use a stick to draw a bird. A real bird flies off, created by the power of Abul's mastery of air, and flies off to spy on Carl's enemies. Laotia tells Carl that once he kills the other three Legbas, he will have power over man and matter for all eternity. Carl wonders what Laotia gets out of it, and she says that she will only ask one reward. When her services are fulfilled, she will tell Carl what she wants.
Cayon performs the ceremony for Stacy's initiation, as Hedley and Jack look on. Once the ceremony is completed, Stacy greets the celebrants. Hedley tells his granddaughter that she is a victory for the light. The cousins arrive and tell Jack that they found Jennifer's body. Stacy overhears them and figures that Laotia is responsible. She tells Hedley to tell the trio the full story, but he insists that it isn't possible. Hedley says that he saw Laotia die, and finally explains that Laotia created the mask to enslave the workers. He and Stacy's parents fought Laotia, and they died in the battle. Hedley drove Laotia into the sea, and the mask disappeared into the water with her.
Ryan wonders of Laotia's spirit lives in the mask, and Jack warns that the shop was contaminated with evil forces. Cayon, overhearing, insists that Laotia couldn't be physically alive. Jack agrees but says that her spirit could live within the mask, and Lewis found it and brought it back using the curse. He tells Hedley that it's possible, but Hedley doesn't believe it and walks away. Stacy asks the trio for help to defeat whoever is hunting the guardians of their religion, and Ryan goes to find Rhodes while Stacy warns Dyzon with Micki. Jack tells Micki to keep an eye on Stacy, while he takes Cayon to the store to protect him.
As Ryan drives off, Carl's bird watches him and then flies away.
Hedley goes to the house basement and finds some liquid released by the mask. He scoops some of it up and leaves.
As Stacy and Micki go to Dyzon and walk on the beach, Carl wearing the mask watches them from the water. Dyzon dismisses them as young ones, being frightened of legends, and says that Nibo wouldn't dare to harm her. Carl emerges from the water and the snake bites Dyzon's throat, taking her loa. Micki leads Stacy away, and Laotia's spirit appears floating on the water and tells Carl that they're no danger to him. She rises out of water and tells Carl that she's given him dominion over air and water. Stacy will lead Carl to a third guardian.
The bird watches from a branch as Ryan drives to Rhodes' house and convinces the lawyer to tell him anything he can remember about the mask. Rhodes remembers the mask but says that it disappeared until a year ago when someone returned it. The lawyer tells Ryan that Carl might know, but he doesn't know or care where Carl is now. Ryan goes back to the car and sees the bird perched on the hood ornament. It flies away, then comes back and attacks him.
Micki and Stacy return to the shop, and tell Jack and Cayon what happened. Hedley comes in and says that he went to the Walters home and found residue that a spirit leaves when it comes to their plane. He explains that Laotia was his wife, and Stacy's father died fighting his mother. Hedley thought Laotia was gone forever, but she was just waiting for Stacy to become a woman so that she could take her power while gaining power from the four Legba. Just before dawn, Laotia will take Hedley's soul then place the mask on Stacy and take her body. Hedley figures that some Laotia is using some fool that doesn't know he's damned.
Ryan comes in, clutching at his wounded neck, and tells them that Carl has the mask. The shop shakes and Carl bursts through the floor. He kills Cayon with the mask, and Laotia appears to them. She asks if Hedley can kill her again and disappears, and Carl carries Stacy off. Jack stops Hedley from going after his granddaughter, reminding Hedley that Laotia can't harm Stacy until she kills Hedley. He says that if they get to Laotia before she comes for Hedley, they can stop her.
Back at the house, Carl ties Stacy to a chair at Laotia's command. Laotia says that Stacy is the wish Carl will grant her, and through her she will live again. When the sun rises, she will have a new body and Carl will be master of the earth. Laotia has Carl give her the mask, and once he does so Laotia uses a spell to kill him.
Ryan tells Hedley that they have to give him into the vault to keep him safe. Hedley points out that 20 years ago, he convinced Laotia that he had nothing to live for so she wasn't ready for his attack. He says that they have to get to the house, and Ryan reluctantly goes with him.
Jack and Micki arrive at the house.
Laotia puts the mask on Stacy and sees the sun rising, outside the window.
Jack and Micki break into the house, find Stacy, and untie her. Laotia uses a voodoo doll to torment Jack, and when Micki goes to him, Laotia asks her where Hedley is. She magically torments Micki, demanding an answer, and Hedley and Ryan arrive. Hedley offers his life in return for Stacy's freedom, He describes how good it was to drown Laotia twenty years ago, and Laotia angrily says that she'll have Hedley and Stacy.
Laotia takes the mask from Stacy, then holds it up to the rising sun. Ryan knocks the mask out of Laotia's hands, and the snake takes her loa. Laotia collapses onto the floor, dissipating into mist in seconds. Stacy breaks free of her bonds and hugs Hedley, and Jack recovers.
Later back at the shop, Micki secures the mask in the vault. Jack repairs the whole in the floor that Carl made, and Hedley, Stacy, and Ryan return from the carnival and call Jack and Micki out to dance at the carnival, figuring that beating Laotia is the best reason to celebrate. Micki and Jack go out with them, and Jack jokes about how he used to play the saxophone in high school.
