- Micki and Ryan pose as members of a religious sect to track down a patchwork quilt that is thought to have deadly powers.
- The cousins travel to the colony of a strict religious sect to recover a cursed Quilt. Ryan falls in love with a Penitite girl and considers staying, while the Quilt holder kills the three women who threaten her plans to marry the sect's leader.—Gislef
- The religious sect Penitite is led by Reverend Josiah Grange, and he is in love with Jane Spring and soon they will marry each other. They are kissing each other in a carriage, when Effie Stokes says that Jane would be too young to marry the Reverend. However, he contests her words, saying that she is of legal age to marry. Effie takes a quilt hidden in a box and dreams on Jane, killing her in the dream. Jane also dies in real life. The elder Sarah Good visits Curious Goods and tells Jack, Ryan and Micki that she bought the Quilt of Hathor from Lewis, but someone in her community has stolen the quilt. Ryan and Micki go with Sarah to the community to look for the cursed quilt. Ryan falls in love with Josiah's daughter, Laura Grange. Josiah needs to marry a woman due to his position of leader of the community, and he chooses Rebecca Lamb to be his wife. During the night, Effie uses the quilt again to get rid of Rebecca. Sarah confronts Effie and is killed by the quilt. Meanwhile, Ryan is having trouble in the community since he wants to be with Laura, who is promised to marry a man, Matthew, in a loveless arrangement.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- In a Penitite community, Reverent Josiah Grange and Jane Spring are taking a horse-drawn carriage. Joshiah tells Jane that she's a saint, and the Josiah kisses Jane and says that he prays for the night they are wed. Effie Stokes comes out and sees them kissing, and irritably says that they should go inside. Josiah tells Jane that it's no sin to kiss one's betrothed, and Effie says that Jane is but a child. The reverend tells Effie to hold her tongue, reminding her that he's First Elder of the colony and Jane is of legal age. Jane walks off, and Josiah tells Effie to see to the horse.
Josiah goes after Jane, and Effie goes to her room. She takes a quilt out of a hidden compartment in her bed chest. Down the hall in her room, Jane kneels at her bed, prays, and cries. Meanwhile, Effie spreads the guilt on her bed and lies down beneath it. She dreams of a Colonial ballroom, and Josiah coming in to dance with her. They appear in Jane's dream, and Jane sees them dance. Effie dances off and Josiah dances with Jane on a balcony. Appearing on the dance floor below, Effie tells Josiah that it's time. He shoves Jane over the balcony and she falls to her death, dying in real life as she sleeps. Meanwhile, the dream-Effie joins Josiah in dancing.
Later at Curious Goods, Sarah Good arrives and tells them that she bought a quilt from Lewis. Jack finds the Quilt of Hathor in the manifest, sewn by Salem women in the 18th century who followed the occult. Sarah says that the quilt was stolen, and figures that another member of the Penitites stole it. She was glad to see it gone, saying that it brought dreams arousing feelings she never knew she had. Jack prepares to have Ryan and Micki infiltrate the sect, and Sarah tells Ryan that he has to dress plainer than he is currently. She tells Micki that she can't attract attention, and Jack notes that the Penitites don't like modern ways.
Later, Sarah takes Ryan and Micki to the colony. Josiah is mourning over Jane's grave, and Sarah points out the colony church. The Penitites have a communal barn, and the hall where their "unmarried" live in separate sections, male and female.
The carriage pulls up to the hall where the Penitites eat their meal. Laura Grange, Josiah's daughter, runs up to greet Sarah. Ryan is immediately attracted to her, and Sarah introduces Laura to the cousins and says that they're investigating the Penitite faith. The man who drove the carriage, Matthew, announces that he and Laura are betrothed. Ryan congratulates the couple, and Sarah says that the Elders arrange their marriages and Laura is upset that Matthew was chosen for her.
That night, the Penitites gather for supper and Josiah says grace. He says a prayer for the deceased Jane, and afterward Effie says that Jane had her faults like the rest of them. Sarah warns her not to speak against the dead out of envy, and Ryan asks Laura and Matthew when they're getting married. Matthew tells him that they're getting married in a week, when Laura turns 20. Laura says that she was pledged to Matthew when she was 7, and when Ryan comments on being married to someone chosen for them, Effie tells him to be silent and eat his food.
After dinner, Sarah takes Micki and Ryan to their rooms and explains that they never lock their doors. She tells them that they rise and sleep with the sun, and Ryan goes outside to take a look around. As he checks one of the carriages, Laura goes into the communal barn. Ryan sees her and goes in, and finds Laura singing a lullaby to a horse. He says that the song is beautiful and sings alone with her, and they dance together.
Matthew comes in, shoves Ryan to the floor, and draws a razor on him. He says that he saw the sin of lust in Ryan's eyes and threatens to cut his throat. Laura tells Matthew that they have sins that condemn Matthew if he kills, and Matthew says that he has waited all of his life for Laura to become a woman. She says that murder isn't their way, and Matthew gives her the razor. Matthew tells Ryan that they will settle things the Penitite way, at a hearing. Laura says that Josiah will determine the truth and what action they should take.
The next day at the communal hall, Josiah holds a hearing with the other two Elders, one of who is Effie. Josiah assures Ryan that it's not a trial. Matthew accuses Ryan of being an adulterer and calls for banishment. He says that Ryan and Laura were dancing together, and Laura says that the fault was her. She explains what happened, and says that she sang the horse her mother's lullaby. When she sings it, Josiah finally tells her to stop, saying music is forbidding.
Ryan explains that he danced with Laura, and Micki speaks up saying that Ryan didn't know it was wrong. Josiah finally says that the Word of God is plain that they must shun music and dance. However, he also says that God wouldn't object to a mother singing a lullaby to a child. He tells Ryan that he will abide by their ways and stay far from Laura, warns Ryan that the next step in dealing with him will be far less pleasant, and calls the regular business meeting.
Outside, Micki tells Ryan that they should get the Quilt and go as soon as they can. In the hall, Sarah presents the check for the six cows they sold. Effie wants to see the colony's lecture, but Josiah tells her that everything is fine. The third elder, Fraser, tells Josiah that an account of the colony's finances is required every quarter. Josiah insists that he's God's steward and they don't dare question him.
Effie says that Josiah has been widowed for six months, and their laws require that Josiah be married so his wife can glide the colony if Josiah dies. Josiah gives in and says there can only be one choice, and leaves. Later in her room, Effie rehearses her acceptance of Josiah's proposal and she will control everyone who once shunned her.
Micki and Ryan search the rooms for the Quilt, and all Ryan finds is a magazine from the outside world in Matthew's room. He looks outside while Micki goes to Effie's room. Effie is there and hides before Micki sees her, and confronts Micki when Micki finds Effie's hand mirror in the bed chest. Micki claims that she thought it was Sarah's room, but Effie doesn't believe her. She apologizes for breaking Effie's mirror when Effie startled her, and Effie grabs Micki by the throat and says that she'll make Micki suffer if she makes it known Effie has a mirror, as the Penitites forbid mirrors. She then sends Micki out and clutches the mirror to her chest.
Later at the communal hall, Josiah announces that is marrying Rebecca Lamb. Effie is disappointed that he didn't choose her but hides it.
That night, Laura returns to the stable. Ryan comes in and suggests that the horse Cameo wants to hear the lullaby, and says that he had to apologize to Laura despite the risk. Laura says that she feels the same for Ryan, and he invites her to come back for a visit. As she refuses, they hear Matthew outside calling to Laura. Laura hides Ryan beneath the hay, and Matthew comes in. He jabs a pitchfork into the hay to feed Cameo, and then tells Laura that they'll got to the hall and he won't leave her alone until they wed. Behind them, blood seeps out from beneath the hay.
In her room, Effie takes out the Quilt and lies beneath it. She enters Sarah's dreams and creates the same ballroom, feeding food to Josiah as Sarah looks on. Sarah finally shoves Ellie to the floor and sits next to Josiah, and Effie poisons Sarah's wine. Sarah dies in the dream and in real life, while Effie dances with the dream Josiah.
Micki goes to the barn looking for Ryan, and he moans in pain. The pitchfork hit his arm, and Micki says that it's hard to watch someone she cares about making a mistake. Ryan insists that it's no mistake and Laura is the sweetest, most beautiful girl he's ever met. Micki reminds Ryan that Laura is engaged to be married, and the two of them are worlds apart regardless. Ryan insists that it shouldn't matter, and the Penitites gather when they learn Sarah is dead. Ryan is worried about Laura, and Micki tells him to focus on finding the Quilt.
Later, the Penitites bury Sarah. Josiah asks God why he has unleashed the seeds of a plague in the community, and asks for understanding. He asks what he's done to offend God, and Ryan and Micki watch. Ryan figures that someone used the Quilt to kill the two women, and figures that Josiah is the link. Micki figures that it's someone jealous of Josiah's fiancés, and stops Ryan from asking Laura.
Ryan ignores Micki and approaches Laura. She warns that they will shun him if they see him with her, but says that she won't. Ryan persists and asks about any women who are attracted to Josiah. Laura explains that if anything happens to Josiah, his wife would become the new reverend. She tells Ryan that Effie has been infatuated with Josiah, but Josiah barely notices her. Laura says that mortal love is often cruel, and she and Ryan kiss.
Matthew comes up and shoves Ryan to the ground. He prepares to smash in Ryan's head with a rock, but Laura and an arriving Josiah tell him to stop. Matthew does so, and Josiah says that they will settle it in the old way with a Cleansing. Before Laura can explain, Josiah orders her away.
That night, the Penitites make a pit of coals with a triangular structure over it. Ryan is given a staff and set up on the structure, and a similarly-armed Matthew joins him. Josiah calls on God, and Sarah tells Micki that the loser will fall into the coals. Ryan and Matthew fight, and Ryan is knocked into the coals. He manages to use the staff as a brace to prevent himself from falling into the coals, then hits Matthew with the staff.
Effie walks off, and Ryan beats Matthew down. Ryan finally knocks Matthew off the structure onto the ground outside the pit, jumps down, and walks off with Laura.
Going to Effie's room, Sarah takes out the Quilt. Effie has followed her, and when Sarah sees her she says that she was seeking something that was taken from her. Sarah saw Effie's delight when the two women died, and Effie denies her feelings. The older woman doesn't believe it and walks out, and Effie goes into her room, closes the door, and contemplates her bed chest with the Quilt.
Micki approaches Sarah and wonders what she's going to do with Ryan. Sarah says that if it's God's will, they should rejoice. She tells Micki that she believes Effie has the Quilt, and Effie caught her searching Effie's room.
Effie goes to bed beneath the Quilt, enters Sarah's dreams, and sets her up as a chambermaid cleaning the dance floor as Effie and the dream Josiah dance. Sarah continues to accuse Effie of being a murderess, and Effie turns to reveal her face as hideously scarred. She beats Sarah over the head with a candlestick, then sets her dress on fire with the candle. In real life, the sleeping Sarah knocks over a candle and sets her drapes on fire.
The Penitites spot the fire and sound the alarm. Micki hears it and wakes up, and she and Ryan go to Sarah's bedroom. Elder Florence tells them that Sarah is dead, and Micki figures Effie is responsible. She leads the way to Effie's room, finds her awake, and asks where the Quilt is. Micki takes the Quilt, and Effie accuses her of stealing and bearing false witness. The cousins leave with the Quilt before the Penitites can stop them.
The next day, the Penitites bury Sarah. Micki packs, and Ryan tells her that he's staying to be with Laura. She warns that the colony is all wrong for him, and Ryan says that he found Laura and figures he's in love with her. Ryan tells Micki that he's been looking for a sense of peace. Micki asks about the cursed items and wonders what she tells Jack, and Ryan says that they all do what they have to do. She says that she deserves better and could handle it because they faced danger together, and she can't do it alone. Ryan assures her that Jack will be fine and Micki doesn't need him. As Mick goes, she tells Ryan that she'll miss him. Ryan watches from the window as Micki takes a carriage to the train station.
Back at the store, Micki looks at a bust of a horse and sings the lullaby Laura sang to Cameo. As she breaks into tears, Jack arrives and Micki tells him that Ryan isn't coming home. Jack is shocked that Ryan is considering becoming a Penitite, and Micki doesn't believe that Ryan will grow out of it. He says that he'll miss Ryan, and Micki agrees.
Micki tells Jack that she got the Quilt. Jack has found out that the user can dream anything they want and it becomes someone else's nightmare. He takes the Quilt up and it snags on the table it's lying on. Jack sets the Quilt on fire, and he and Micki realize that since the antiques are indestructible, the Quilt they have is a fake.
