- A frustrated dreamer turns to the supernatural to achieve success, using an ornate pipe to eliminate anyone who gets in his way.
- Ryan's father, Ray, is an inventor "promoter" who uses a cursed pipe give to him by Lewis to kill an inventor, take his invention, and sell it as his own. Enough money results that Ray plans to get married, and his fiancee invites Ryan to the wedding. Ryan brings Micki along, and has to accept that his father is using a cursed object, while negotiating his rocky relationship with his sire.—Gislef
- By the end of an inventor's seminar, Ray Dallion offers to assist the inventor Keith Fielding to promote his invention. He convinces Keith to show the design of his weapon capable to fire a small missile at a long distance. Ray lights a pipe and Keith is attacked by an orange smoke and vanishes. Ray takes the credit for the invention and impresses Buck Clemens, the owner of a weapons company. Ray proposes to marry his wife Connie and moves from his cheap apartment to a nice house. A couple of days later, Ryan receives an invitation for the wedding of his father Ray and Micki goes with him. When they arrive at Ray's address, he is surprised by the presence of his estranged son, and they learn that Connie has invited Ryan. Now Ray has to demonstrate the weapon to investors and feels stressed when his co-worker John York tells him that he knows that Ray has stolen the design from Keith Fielding.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- At an inventors seminar, Ray Dallion approaches another inventor, Keith Fielding, and asks for a light. Ray takes out an ornate antique pipe and says a rich uncle gave it to him. Fielding says that it's the first time he's been at such a seminar, and Ray says that he's a "conduit" looking for an unsung genius that he can help as a promoter. Ray figures that Fielding has an idea, and Fielding tells him that he's working on something he hasn't shown to anyone yet.
Ray invites Fielding to talk about it, and Fielding shows him his plans for a self-contained lightweight laser site that fires a small missile. Impressed, Ray says that it's years ahead of its time, and he's been looking for it all of his life. He suggests a partnership and lights his pipe, and red smoke emerge from it and drift into Fielding's face. He coughs and runs out of the conference room, and the red smoke follows him. Ray stares at the pipe in shock, while the red smoke slowly and painfully dissolves Fielding into nothing. The smoke disappears, and Ray pockets the pipe and leaves with the plans.
Later, Ray develops the weapon that he's taking credit for, and demonstrates it to the CEOs at Clemens Munitions. Buck Clemens is impressed, and says that he's the one in charge and Ray is on the payroll. One man, John York, points out that his weapon, the XB-22, is already slated for production. Clemens tells him that Ray's weapon is better, and York reluctantly agrees. Once Clemens leaves, York congratulates Ray on his "coup". Ray says that it's just the beginning.
Later, Ray takes flowers to his wife Connie at their cheap apartment. He gives the flowers to his fiancé, Connie, and says that his life has turned around, and tells Connie that she deserves better and he's going to get it.
A few days later at Curious Goods, Micki returns and gives Ryan a letter for him. It's a wedding invitation from Ray, Ryan's father. Ryan is less than thrilled and says that he isn't going because he hasn't seen Ray for years and Ray already considered his son a disappointment. eventually Ryan got tired of it, quit school, and went as far away as he could. Micki tells Ryan that he can't keep running, and maybe it's time to make peace. Ryan finally gives in, as long as Micki goes with him.
Micki and Ryan drive to Ray's new home, an expensive home. Ryan is surprised at the wealth his father now has, and figures that it's a mistake. Ray greets them and wonders why Ryan is there. Ryan shows him the invitation, and Connie comes up and says that she sent the invitation. Ray wonders why Connie didn't tell him she invited Ryan, and she says that she thought it was time the two of them buried the hatchet. She suggests that Ray show Ryan the factory, and Ray reluctantly gives in. Once Ryan and Ray go up to the guest room with the bags, Connie convinces Micki to help her with the wedding preparations for the next night.
Ray takes Ryan to the factory and talks about the laser homing system he "created". After the demonstration the next day for the buyers, right after the wedding, he's "home free". Ray tells Ryan that everything he's got is riding on the demonstration, and a man in his position always has enemies. York comes up and says that he wants a word with Ray later.
Once York leaves, Ray tells Ryan that York is jealous of his success and talks about how his father died when he was born and he never knew him. The older man talks glowingly about how Lewis was like a father to him, and their relationship was a secret between them. He talks about how Lewis healed him with a relic when he cut his neck as a child, and he loved Lewis. One day Lewis struck it rich overnight, and figured that if Lewis could do it, so could he.
At the house, Connie and Micki clean the house. Micki finds Ray's old photo album, and among them is a photo of Lewis. Connie says that Lewis is the only person who ever gave Ray a Christmas present, and she mentions that Lewis gave Ray an old pipe in his later years.
Ray demonstrates his weapon to Ryan, and Ryan is surprised that Ray came up with the idea. Ryan angrily tells his son that the weapon is solid, and if the demonstration goes the way he believe it will go, it will make him a rich man. He invites Ryan to hold the gun, but Ryan refuses and Ray angrily says that he's the artistic type. He invites Ryan to stay at the factory so he can get him a good job. Ryan tells his father that he has a job recovering the antiques that Lewis sold for the Devil. Ray wonders what he's talking about, and Ryan tells him to forget about it.
York comes in and tells Ray that he wants to see him now in his lab. Ray asks Ryan to wait for him so they can talk further, and goes to York's lab. In the lab, York asks Ryan to assign all the rights of his weapon to him and then fade away. When Ray refuses, York shows him a portfolio he's made showing that Fielding invented the weapon and never filed the patent. York brings in Nathan, Fielding's brother. Nathan says that his brother disappeared, says that they can hang onto the copies of the plans, and leaves.
Ray take out the pipe from his jacket pocket, follows York out into the hallway as the latter leaves, and uses the pipe to kill him. York runs away, and Ray goes after him with the red smoke chasing him. When York comes to a locked door, the smoke disintegrates him before he can unlock it. Ray, calmly watching, tells York that it's too late to help him and walks away. Micki arrives and sees York's disintegration, and finds Ryan and calls him over. By the time they get back, York is gone.
Coming back, Ray asks why Micki is there. Ryan says that Micki just had a scare, and Ray angrily asks her what she saw. Micki says that she got confused and her imagination got the better of her, and leaves with Ryan.
That night in his office, Ray puts the pipe in his desk drawer and locks it away.
Back at the house, Ryan is in the guest room when Micki comes in and says she needs to know more about Ray. Ryan talks about he wishes Ray would be proud of who he is, and says that success is the only thing in Ray's life. He says that it got worse after his father died, and Ray dragged Ryan and his mother from one town to another looking for the "next big thing". Micki describes what she saw, but Ryan dismisses it as a practical joke or an accident. He doesn't believe that an antique is involved, and notes that Micki never saw the pipe. Ryan doesn't believe his father would use a cursed object, and asks Micki to give Ray a break. Micki agrees to drop the matter and leaves.
In their bedroom, Ray tells Connie that he wants Ryan and Micki to leave. He doesn't want to blow the demonstration by dividing his attention three ways, and Connie starts crying when Ray snaps at her. Ray tries to apologize, and she says that she thought Ray's dream coming true would make him happy. He's sullen and angry now. Ray insists that things will be okay once the demonstration goes okay, and tells her that it's the pressure and hugs her, crying.
Micki goes to the phone and calls Jack at the shop, asking him if he knows about the pipe.
The next day, Ryan helps Connie set up for the wedding. Micki is looking through drawers for the pipe, and Ray finds her and asks if she's looking for something. She says that she's looking for linen napkins, and Ray directs her to the kitchen. Jack arrives and greets the cousins, and Ryan explains that Jack is a friend of Lewis and owes his life to Ryan. Connie invites him to stay and help decorate, and Jack accepts.
Jack talks to Micki privately, and says that the manifest lists an 18th century pipe but Lewis never sold it. They figure Lewis gave it to Ray as a present, and they have to find it and tell Ryan nothing until they're sure.
Ray dresses for the wedding and helps Ryan tie his tie. When Ray demands to know why Ryan is there, Ryan says that he wanted to see his father, and Connie invited him. He doesn't want anything from Ray, and hopes his demonstration is a success and he doesn't want any of his money. When Ray asks about Jack and Micki, Ryan tells him that Ray is the one who taught him right from wrong, and that's why he hunts down Lewis' cursed antiques. Ray is taken aback and says that they should go to the factory for the demonstration. He admits that he was wrong for thinking Ryan was a little boy, and Ryan wasn't the little boy he was angry at. As Ryan gets the car keys from a drawer, he doesn't find them. Ray angrily confronts Connie, who says that Micki and Jack went out for a bite to eat. He accuses Ryan of stalling him and drives off. Ryan has Connie loan him her car so he can get to the factory.
Ray drives to the factory, and finds Clemens outside with the buyer, General Abelar, and Abelar's aide Diego Esposito. Clemens introduces Ray as the weapon designer, and Ray goes in saying he's going to get things ready. Once he leaves, both Abelar and Esposito note that Ray is a nervous man.
Micki and Jack are searching Ray's office, and hear Ray coming. They hide as he comes in and gets the pipe from the desk drawer. Micki grabs the pipe and runs out into the hallway, and Ray breaks free of Jack and chases after her. She runs into the weapon range and Jack follows them, grabbing Ray. Micki runs out while Ray knocks Jack down and manages to taser him with a nearby taser. Ray props the unconscious Jack behind the targets in the weapon platform, and then leaves.
Clemens brings Abelar and his entourage to the range where he's laid out champagne, and proposes a toast to Abelar. He then takes out Ray's gun, and Abelar asks to try it out himself. He shoots and blows up one of the other targets. Ryan and Connie arrive and ask Clemens where Ray is. Abelar shoots another target.
Ray finds and grabs Micki, punching her to the floor and taking the pipe from her. He lights it up and Micki runs.
Abelar prepares to shoot the target Jack is behind. Ryan sees Jack's hand at the base of the target, and yanks up the barrel of the gun so that Abelar shoots the ceiling instead. He runs over to help Jack.
Ray walks after the fleeing Micki, who ducks into a room and closes the door.
Ryan wakes up Jack, who tells him that Micki is in danger from the pipe Ray is using. Ryan grabs the gun and runs after his father.
Ray finds Micki and unleashes the smoke. She tries to seal the door with duct tape, but the smoke filters in before she can succeed. Ray mutters an apology, and Ryan arrives and tells Ray to give him the pipe, aiming the gun at his father. When Ray calls Ryan his son, Ryan insists that he's not Ray's son and demands to know where Micki is.
Realizing that Ryan is serious, Ray directs Ryan to the room but says that it's over and the pipe always takes a life. Moving forward, Ryan is enveloped by the smoke and starts to die. Realizing what he's done, Ray, shoves Ryan out of the smoke and takes his son's place. Ryan and Micki can only watch as Ray disintegrates.
That night at the house, Micki apologizes to the arriving guests, saying the wedding is off. Connie calls the authorities, who haven't seen any sign of Ray. She figures Ray ran off like his father, and figures that Ray fell apart under the strain. As Micki comforts her, Jack finds Ryan. Ryan wonders why Ray got mixed up with the pipe, and Jack sympathizes with how Ray saw his future or lack thereof. The younger man says that he didn't know Ray at all. Micki comes in and says that Ryan did, and in the end Ray knew Ryan. Jack notes that like Lewis, Ray renounced the curse and suffered the consequences. However, in Ray's case, he did it for love. Crying, Ryan embraces Micki.
