The evolution of the Flintstones
Gblakelii21 March 2012
Plot of this episode is very similar to The Honeymooners episode in which Ralph and Ed feud over a co-purchased TV, except here, it is a swimming pool instead. The Fred and Barney drawings are not quite finalized yet, nor is Barney's voice. But the story is a good sample of the series. Both Wilma and Betty have good parts as well. You may notice that the footage from the pilot is used also. Speaking of the Flintstones origins, check out, Granite Hotel(1940). As for the music, already perfect. It shows how Hanna and Barbera were at their peak in this area already. Daws Butler, who also did the voices for Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear is a featured voice. He was also heard in a Hanna-Barbera record album, Yogi Bear and the Three Stooges meet the Mad Mad Mad Dr. No No, playing virtually all the roles, except for the actual The Three Stooges!

Big, kind-hearted Barney!
gregorycanfield20 April 2022
Although third in rotation, this was the first episode produced. This episode expanded on the Flagstones, the two-minute pilot episode. What really stands out here is the crude way the characters were drawn. The style also changes, from scene to scene. In this story, you get the feeling that Fred and Barney weren't exactly "friends.' Not only were they consistently at odds, but they often called each other "neighbor." The "swimming pool" stuff is fun. Referring to my heading. When I watched this episode, as a kid, my impression was that Fred had six pairs of eyebrows while he said that line. Another example of the varying drawing style, throughout the episode. A good start to the series.

The pool

Warning: Spoilers
This episode expands on the pilot episode it's a constant battle over who gets to use the pool they put in together ( although Barney does all the work). Both use it for different people they are associated with.

Fred arranges for a buddy to dress up as a cop to bust up what he thinks is Barney's pool warning party. Wilma also reminds Fred Barney is the best friend he's got. It's actually a birthday party for Fred ! The party is in full swing and a neighbor calls the police Fred thinks it's his buddy and throws him in the pool! The buddy shows up and says he couldn't get the costume! In the end Barney brings Fred some cake and with the money Wilma gave him bails Fred out .

Pool scenes are very funny
vitoscotti21 October 2022
The similarities to the "The Honeymooners" is remarkable. Even noticed it as a kid. Wonder how "The Honeymooners" creators responded to the copying. The two shows weren't really that far off when made. Loved the pool scenes. Great witty humor. The poolside musicians and their music were a highlight. The pool depth seemed to randomly change. Love how dinosaurs are incorporated in the humor and wit. The police car on top of the dinosaur was priceless. Fred using a dinosaur at work in the quarry to do the digging was a very funny scene. We hear Hal Smith (Otis Campbell from The Andy Griffith Show) which was a real treat as the upset neighbor. Very good not spectacular episode.
