A patient that already has a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) line does not need to have a central line put in, that would be redundant. A PICC is essentially a central line that is designed to left in for a longer duration (usually less than a year), the catheter is just inserted through a peripheral vein (typically the basilic or brachial) in the upper arm instead of into the jugular. The catheter is then advanced through the chest into the superior vena cava just like a standard central line.
