Stanley Lachman and Laurie Mitchel portrayed Edward and Mary Beale in the previous episode, "California Gold Rush in Reverse," which originally aired on 30 Sep 1957. "Camel Train" aired on 1 Oct 1957, the following night.
Two movies have been made based on the Camel Corps expedition: "Southwest Passage" (1954) and "Hawmps" (1976).
In 1856, the US Army acquired 33 camels and five handlers. In 1857, the Army acquired an additional 41 camels and 10 handlers, including "Hi Jolly" (Hadji Ali, born Philip Tedro c.1828-1902). Part of the reason the experiment failed is that Army horses and mules were afraid of the camels, and often panicked.
Several of the actors look directly at the camera, discussing the history of the experiment and give facts about camels.
